when i was younger, my teacher gave us this relaly fun one, called "deflating the tire" its a contest to strenghthen your diapraghm without the kids knowing it :) basically, line them up, and then tell them how to play :
"take a deep breath, as deep as you can, then when i say go, start blowing out your air, the one who lasts the longest while blowing out his/her air without taking a breath, is the winner!" its really fun, and when you do it, it sounds like a tire is deflating. with a lot of kids, it sounds pretty funny :)
and, when i had to do that, i loved it. cuz, kids are competitivie. make sure that no one is breathing, by making them plug their nose, and frequently putting your hand near their mouth to make sure they are blowing out air. some kids will cheat, but do try this game.
the ones who win, take air in from the lungs AND diaphragm. and, since singing comes from the diaprhragm, (ive mispelt it like 20 times already) it will strenghten it, and the kids will figure out to use their diaphragm more.

There definitely are other things you should be doing/learning in your lessons. There are lots of song-singing classes and private lessons out there. Those are fun recreation. But those are not what I would call teaching vocal technique. In a lesson, you should sing vocal exercises with a purpose. You should be learning to coordinate your breath and tone, find an easy and resonant tone, learn to even out your tone quality through the register shifts, learn breathing and support (two different things), etc. The list goes on. And there would be specific things that would apply to YOU and YOUR voice. You might have particular rough spots that need to be ironed out. And you might have particularly good vocal attributes that need to be further developed. The teacher should help you make the right adjustments, by suggesting corrections as you vocalize. Your gut feeling is right. Talk to your singer friends and ask what goes on in their lessons. Don't settle for just singing songs if you really want to improve your voice.

It's very possible to learn to sing well. You just need to know the right methods. Learn here https://tr.im/improveyourvoice
Singing teachers will cost money and can be expensive so they're not for everyone. Singing can be learned so it's not an "either you have it or you don't" kind of thing.
Whether you sound like crap or you're decent, I recommend this singing course. It's one of the best methods to learn to sing well in a short amount of time. It's all about using efficient techniques that work.

If the beginning singer needs to stay within a budget, the online option may be a good choice, at least while learning some basic skills. There are many online sites that claim to teach people to sing, but care should be taken to find a legitimate site with credentials. The singer would not want to waste time with an inferior vocal training site that may even cause harm to the singer's voice. The singer may want to sing a song so badly that he or she will neglect the basic steps and try to sing before the voice is ready.

say this about 4-5 times for a fun warm up- have one person say it, then everyone else repeat it. find a rhythm you like. first, start crouched on the ground and whisper it, each time "growing" and saying it louder until they are looking up and yelling it:
To sit in solmn silence
On a dull dark dock
In a pestilential prison
With a big brass lock
Awaiting the sensation
Of a cold, sharp shock
From a chipped and chipping chopper
On a big black box

i'm only 17 and i teach voice as a part-time job. they really enjoy the exercises i give them and it really helps them improve on their breathing. we go up and down the scale and sing "mayo mayo mayo mayonaise" or we just keep singing "bubbilicious" to the highest note that they can get.
you'll have a great time.

C jump to O and then back down keeping the open O sound. Me-May-Ma-Mo-Moo. Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha jumping in thirds up and down the scale. Kou-start on the 8th and make them keep the O sound as the descend the scale, make sure there is a clear K sound.
