It's unlikely that you'll find it online, unless you're lucky enough that their name was Fullen or something.

Generally what you need to do is trace back to whomever owned them, then go to the Virginia Archives and start searching probate records, tax rolls, bills of sale, etc. For instance, I've been able to find a bill of sale of a slave from a mother to her daughter at the time of the daughter's wedding. The bill listed the slave only by her first name, but then gave the names of the parents (again first names only) and the names of their owners. Then I went back to the owners of the parents and tracked their bills of sale and estates to find out who they owned and their "inventory of slaves" in their probate records. It's tedious and needs to be done in person, but a few days of research is usually pretty worthwhile.

A couple of the best genealogy websites out there are the Latter Day Saints database www.familysearch.org and genforum.com. The nice thing about them is that they're free and have a ton of information. You might also try usgenweb.org, which will take you to a specific state's genealogy links.

Good luck!

It depends on the time that the person lived. If this individual was around near the end of slavery (1850 or later), the person would (most likely) be in the U. S. Census slave schedules. Otherwise, the slave records varied by state, county, and locality. Good hunting and may God bless and keep you.
