I know your pain! Well what i do is take Tylenol and chew gum for a while so that the pain will eventually go away. Be careful not to eat apples or chew hard stuff because that can break your brackets. also be sure to eat mushy stuff for the first few days! that;s all i can tell you. sorry if i wasnt helpful. dont worry, it'll go away for a week...especially since its your first time. but it'll be less as the months go by. GOOD LUCK

Hey, I had braces for 3 years. Yes, they are a pain. I took half an ibuprofen every 6 hours and just nibbled on apple sauce, but you need to chew a sugarless gum like trident. That will help your jaws get used to all of this new pressure. After a day or so it will be easier to chew. I wouldn't eat gummies, that will get stuck and make it very hard to brush, popsicles are good but just don't bite down, suck on them, crackers--maybe dipped in soup. I would just concentrate on the popsicles or some mashed potatos or some mac and cheese that you can just down asap. Good Luck with the braces, I hated it too, but now I have a great smile. Yes, I do agree that tylenol will help but you can also use some warm saltwater rinses. I don't know what wires your Orthodontist used. Generally almost all the Orthodontist's start with Nickle Titanium wires (NiTi) which are super elastic. Few Orthodontist's (like myself) use a different wire called Copper NiTi wires. These wires need heat to be activated. If that is the case, drinking ice water will deactivate the wire. Also use the silicone wax provided by your Orthodontist on the braces, if they bother your cheeks. Honestly, just give it a day or two and the pain/pressure will subside. I am telling this with experience as a patient and an practicing Orthodontist.

I've had braces they'll hurt for like 3 days. Take some asprin. Soup and crackers are the best so are popsicles, but the cold may give you a little shock (brain freeze) don't eat anything sticky (no bubble gum trident is good though) bread is ok but gets stuck in your braces easily. soft fruit is good too. If your gonna eat an apple cut it up. no corn on the cob. try not to rub your tounge on your braces (makes your tounge tender) hop this helps a little

Just take what you usually take for pain. Tylenol, Advil, Aleve. I suggest you eat the soup. To reduce some pain I suggest you mash the popsicles into a slushy like mush. The cold will alleviate some of the pain.
If you have any potatoes lying around. I suggest you make mash potatoes out of them and mix in some vegetables and chicken so you still have your daily nutrients.

try taking ibuprofen for the pain...if the braces are scraping up the inside of your mouth, talk to your dentist - they can give you wax to use on the braces so that it doesn't do that as much (that stuff can get pretty messy, but it does help). As for foods to eat - until you get used to the braces, try things are soft, non-gooey and easy to brush out of the braces after meals. Gummies are NOT a great idea...banana's and other soft fruits would be fine, breads will get stuck, but clean out easily, rice, soup, mac-n-cheese...all would be fairly braces-friendly...your teeth are going to be sore, so it's better to not be biting into anything hard - try tearing food (such as a sandwich or pizza) into bite size bits and putting it in your mouth to chew...easier on the teeth while they're sore.
I'd also take a toothbrush to school/work with you, to clean after meals and things will sometimes get really stuck in there and it's embarassing.
good luck!

Try some good old fashioned Tylenol. Stay away from the cold stuff. Metal, sensitivity, and cold do not go together. Try what best suits you. Drink plenty of fluids to help stave off the headaches from the pain. Last but not least try laying down in a cool dark place for some quiet time. It will pass in about two days. If it gets worse please call your orthodontist, and they can prescribe you some pain medicine.
Hope you feel better soon.

It WILL get better- take it from a mom who's been through this twice with two kids and am starting with a third. The ticket is to take Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) every four hours. If it isn't working, you can take Tylenol every 4 hours in between- this means you are taking something every 2 hours. (Advil/Tylenol/Advil/Tylenol), but only do this for a day or two. After that it will get better- promise...........
