Long story short I am now the owner of a 5 year old neuterd male. I know nothings about them other than what I have read on the internet. Does anyone have personal experience they can share?

they are nice dogs, but they are a working dog and are happier if they have something to keep them busy, you will be much happier too. they are not backyard dogs or a dog that can be kept in the house all day. they will find something to do on their own, like remodel your whole house to their likes not yours. they are very smart sometimes smarter than their owners. so a firm hand is needed. they will also try to heard all the neighbor hood children and may nip at their heals, thus the name. you must remember these dogs were meant to run all day herding sheep or cattle. and nipping at the heals is natural for them.Get involved with some kind of out door activity like fly ball or something like that you may take up running every day 10 miles should do it . I was raised on a cattle ranch and we used these dogs all the time . 1 good dog was worth 3 cowboys on horse back.

Yeah mate a great dog,, very loyal and will protect you ,, however you must be aware that the healer is essentially a working dog,, specifically cattle and they love it,, when I had my dog "Bluey" I lived in the city and he never got near enough exercise and as a consequence got very fat and resembled a wombat,, I have since moved to the country where there a lot of cattle properties and 'Bluey" has proved to be one of the best cattle dogs in the district,, now he's a lean mean runnin machine,, just remember mate these dogs just love to work.

I knew someone who had one, extremely loyal and loves to be around you everywhere you go.

Lots of energy, needs lots of walks and games - the nice thing is that at 5 years old you've probably skipped adolesence stage

They are a cattle herding breed, so they like a 'job'. Anything to focus on and keep them busy. You could try agility, frisbee, flyball...

They sometimes nip at people's heels because they are trying to herd them!

Similarily, some like to chase cars so be careful with that. My friend's died when he was trying to chase a school bus and got hit by it.

All in all, really nice dogs!

You got yourself one loyal friend. be sure to introduce your friends to him or there may be hassels later.
And the bread is a Healer (like a shepard) so it can tell if somone is out to do you wrong so listen to him when he talks to you about your friends.
IE if he don't like them then there is probebly just cause for the dislike.
