I have a friend who is trying hard to better himself in the face of much adversity. He's going to be attending school, and holding down a job. But to do those things he needs a car. Anything that will get him around. Any ideas on cheap cars? I've looked on cars.com, auto.com, beepbeep.com, etc. I'm looking for an alternative like some kind of assistance or something.

Get a used car from a person and not from a dealer, (cheaper) as long as it runs your OK, if you find one that "needs body repair" but still runs, get it and worry about fixing the body when you get money.
Just drive through neighborhoods and look for a car with a for sale sign in the window and haggle with the owner.

Try Police Auctions and Estate Sales... However, you will need cash in hand. I would think $3000 to $5000 will get a decent car.
