I know someone who obviously has anger built up due to personal history. He drank the other day and totally became full of rage, yelling and even used a racial slur towards me. It was scary! Apart from that, he's really a great person with a big heart and has been very unselfish at times. I am a believer. Please tell me your opinions. Thanks.

I believe that it's possible for alcohol to open a person up to demonic influence. But, I don't think that it's the norm. The characteristics you described about your friend are manifestations of what the Bible calls "the flesh" or "the sinful nature"- behavior(s) that originate in our fallen nature as creatures of sin. Read about it in Galatians 5:16-26. The acts of the "sinful nature" are listed there. The fruit that the Holy Spirit produces is also listed there.

One of my favorite movies is Lord of the Rings because it draws the analogy of the inability to carry the ring without it totally corrupting the one who has it. Only a humble hobbit can carry it. My favorite scene is when the Queen Elf played by Kate Blanchette grabs the ring and starts to turn ugly. A similar scene occurs with Bilbo and Froto. It's not power or alcohol that corrupts. It is that they can arouse the sinful nature to do ugly things. The Bible talks a lot about learning to deny the impulses and cravings of the sinful nature. It is a discipline that is not talked about much in many churches today. But, Jesus talked about it a lot. We can't blame our sinful behavior on the devil and his crew. We have to take responsibility for our own sinfulness and die to it as best we can. Sometimes it's best therefore to just abstain from alcohol. But that is a decision for each one to make on his own.

Love, joy and peace.

YES. But not the definition you are thinking of. He is under the influence of spirits as in wine and spirits (alcohol). But not the kind you are thinking of mainly because they don't exist but besides that because drinking alcohol accounts for all of the "symptoms" or behavior that he is experiencing. Now if he started acting "possessed" etc. with no alcohol, maybe you could make a case for evil "spirits."

I think that whenever a person ingests a substance that effects their thinking ability that it makes them more susceptible to demonic infiltration and influences. It doesn't just stop with things that cause intoxication however.

Things like pornography or Ouija boards or tarot cards or other pursuits that go against the commands of God open the gates of our spirits to the influences of evil.

I do believe that demons can still take over our bodies if we let them. We let them by not being in control of ourselves and giving in to addictions. I can't say any more than you can if that was a posession, but his actions were not coming from his heart. Drinking in excess is one of the things that can leave too much room for the enemy to get a hold of our lives.

Pray for him. Try to avoid him when he drinks. When he is sober tell him that you much prefer him sober because he treats you very badly when he is drunk. He may not even remember it if he was very intoxicated.

Prayer is your strongest tool. God bless.

This may sound harsh to you but alcohol is simply courage in a bottle. Pray for him that he will come to terms with his rage. Be prepared when you start praying it will get worse. Pray that he will become a believer also. It makes a huge difference.

I will say you are correct... both in fact and as a pun...I was not of The Christian Faith at the time but I do know that the lack of controle certainly leave on vulnerable to possesion by evil... I did not believe that at the time...nor do most drunks... but as I knew even then evil is real... I have to aggree with your thoughts

yes. When you drink alcohol, you move further and further
away from being in your right mind. This opens up a passage
way for evil spirits to come in. This would explain your friend's
behavior after drinking.

No, he's just had too much to drink. Sounds like you need to talk to him about it. Be honest but not judgemental or he might get mad. If that fails, record him when he gets like that and then play it back for him when he's sober. Let him hear just what kind of a jerk he can be while drinking.

Well anything's possible but most people just become very honest when intoxicated. We lose our minds pretty much. So when he's sober, you should probably confront him about what happened and if he doesn't think it's a big deal you'll have to cut him loose. Good luck.
