well they both have a tendancy to be barkers and share simaller heath problems which include knee and heart issues. they both require regular grooming. i prefer poms. i think they are smarter and more of a people dog. plus they love you to death and are always happy to see you!

I have a black pomeranian and I love him. If you get a pom or a shih you will have to have a lot of time and patients. The both require a lot of brushing. I know that poms DEMAND a lot of attention. Only get a pom if you will have a lot of at home time. This is not a dog you can leave all day. Pom dont really shed a lot but they do shed. And they only bark ( or at least mine does) when something is wrong. Good Luck!!!

Most poms are yippers, having said this, there are 2 women at my job that have poms that don't bark at all! Really between a pom and a shih tzu it is your preference, both breeds are similar in personality it's just what you like in looks, etc. Reminder, a shih tzu will need to be groomed every 4 weeks to keep looking nice and not getting matted, a pom needs groomed as well, just not a frequently. Enjoy!

Both can be yippy. There are few toy breeds that aren't. Both require plenty of grooming - the pom is double coated and the shih tzu has hair that can get tangles and filthy. Remember that toy dogs in particular need extra love and attention to make them good dogs. If you work more than 4 hours at a time, a toy dog may not be a good match for you unless you can do doggie day care.
I recommend going to the AKC site and the breed clubs sites and reading up on the dogs. And of course make sure you either rescue or use a reputable breeder. Both will interview you to make sure that their dogs fit your lifestyle and needs. Puppy mills, backyard breeders, Internet shippers, and most who advertise in the newspapers usually sell sub par animals irresponsibly. I'll link to some questions to ask a breeder as well.
And be sure to get your dog altered as soon as possible. : )
Good luck to you!

My family has had Poms for decades now. They are incredibly smart, and will not yip if they are trained. They are actually very friendly as long as you expose them to a number of different people while in puppyhood. As long as you are grooming and maintaining there isn't a problem with shedding. They are very protective of their owners, and have the sweetest personalities. Good Luck!

I've had two poms. The first one was so mean that my son called him "crack head". The second is sweeter than sugar & I've never heard him growl at anything. A good test for aggressiveness is to give the dog a treat; let him get used to having it and try to take it away from him. If he growls or bites, you might want to look at another puppy.

My wife and I have a pomeranian and love her. Our Pom is intelligent, and well behaved. She is not a barker, and loves people. Overall, a great dog.

well poms blow there coats and shiatsu have to be sheared or they get all matted up and look really bad. They are both nice dogs, but a pom will be alittle standoffish and could bite. they are both lap dogs.
