I don't mean in respect of the individual woman, but generally as a principle, what is the male attitude to being asked out by a woman?

He's not a jerk, he's pretty shy though, I've known him for years, and I'm not desperate or cheap...God people on here can be mean!

Why not split the fence? Tell him you'd really like him to ask you out sometime. That way, all you're doing is expressing interest. He still gets to take the initiative, and ask you.

They'd go: "Oh, she's probably paying. Cool!" If you ask about this topic, you'd probably want to do it, yourself. My advice is Go ahead. People would think you're a true person, with true feelings and guts. Which is something women are generally trying to shy away from, following a trend of uniformity. And that's weird from people battling for equality between the sexes.
What' important, like everything in life, is the way you do it. If you're desperate, that will show. If you're not, that will also be seen. Cool, nice, funny, witty, whatever you may - or may not - be, are most likely gonna come across as such. So don't worry. Moreover, if he likes you, it won't even matter all that much if you seem a bit desperate, or uncool, or "unfunny" - I wonder what the hell he sees in you - (I'm not saying you are all these, but that attraction has its own laws). You should try it. You will feel free and empowered. And if rejected - the guy may have somebody else, or maybe - God forbid - not be that much into you - but you'll never know, until you try it - if you get rejected, says I, that's not such a horrible thing, if you are a balanced person. After all, it's part of life, guys get it a lot - it's a normal thing, not everybody has to love a particular dude - and I'm not saying guys are necessarily balanced persons, here.
On the other hand, there are some jerks who will probably think they're gonna score. So be careful you're not talknig to a primate who won't give a rat's *** about the beautiful things I've written here. Good luck!

personaly if a girl asked me out i'd be shocked.
but i'm guessing you're asking for a specific response to your situation.
Just remeber this it is now 2006 and before too long it will be 2007, with that in mind why; when women in general have been claiming equal rights for centuries should it be a problem for a girl to ask out a guy. It is the next evolutiionary step towards 100% equal rights, am i right?

so just ask out the guy. if he is already a friend then tell him you want to become more than just friends. he will probably be shocked and delighted for you bringing up the topic.

For me it would depend on the situation. If it was at a bar I would be skeptical just because if she is doing that at the bar now who knows if she has done it before. If it is someone I am friends with or something like that and I would like to go out with her then by all means I would.

some men are too shy to ask out a woman, and opposites attract. outgoing women should not have a problem asking out men, as long as they're not a total stranger.

I think men must find it flattering if a woman asks him out. It certainly makes him remember you.
