Truthfully? I once would've said that it would be easier for me to smoke it, but now that I truly truly can't, I'd say that it should be legal so that police and law enforcement agencies could spend more time on truly dangerous illegal activity like rape, murder, robbery, etc, rather than worry about a few pot heads with the munchies....not to mention the tax money the govt. would make on pot, have you seen the taxes on tobacco????

Some argument for legalization of marijuana:

Less overcowding of our jails and legal system for non-violent offenders (dealers and users alike).

Sales of the product can be run by govt. agents much like state-run liquor stores and taxes collected to help reduce municipal, state, and federal deficits.

Cash crop for farmers, sell for big profit, and reduce dependency on government farm subsidy programs.

Lessen the impact of illegal foreign imports and our efforts to stop those imports. Buy American !!!

Some arguments against the legalization of marijuana:

Worker productivity could show a marked decrease and work related accidents increase.

Opens a doorway for the acceptance and future legalization of other, more harmful drugs.

Increase in illness related to marijuana smoking such as heart disease and lung cancer.

Increased personal and family dysfunction due to the nature of drug addiction (physical or mental addiction)

There have always been people imposing their will (founded or unfounded) on others. Marijuana is not a dangerous, mind altering drug and millions of people smoke pot, many daily with no ill effects on society. Laws banning it's use are archaic and unjust to those who find happiness, relief, or artistic enlightenmnet with pot.

For every negaitive effect on the body thier is a positive. Saying it is bad for you is ignorant. Alcohol is bad for you too. But we drink that. And why do we drink it. Because prohibition didn't work. It created more crime than it stopped. Same thing with weed. We are filling our jails (about 50%) with non-violent drug offenders and letting dangersous people out early. The war on drugs is just as much a failure as prohibition. Study after study funded with our tax dollars has proven that the amount of people using drugs will have a negligable change if they were legal. Lets tax it instead of spending billions of our money fighting it. Whats wrong with an age limit. I was able to get weed when I was 18 easier than alcohol. There were no local alcohol dealers around my neighborhood. Shut down the gangs drug turf. That will save lots of lives. Let the liquior stores sell it to 21 and over.

Marijuana is not the Gateway drug. Alcohol is.

I think if you want to smoke you should be able to smoke. I'll goes as far as saying we should be able to grow small amounts for personal use. Plain and simple, it is a plant. The government should not be allowed to tell anyone what they can or can't do in the privacy of their own home, especially when they cause no harm or infringe on the rights of other citizens. It is one thing if someone drives high, drops their joint, and while picking it up they hit another car. That is bad, but... The person who gets off of work, slips into the hot tub, takes a couple of hits on the bong, and then watches Conan O'Brien, should not be considered a criminal. There are entirely to many nonviolent criminals in prison today, and most of them are there for marijuana charges. 77,000 to be exact. I would rather the prison house real criminals; like rapists, child molesters, kidnappers, and murderers. They should not be used to hold a person who smoked a PLANT!!!

Marijuana alleviates debilitating symptoms and PAIN in many people without the harmful, and too often DEADLY, side effects of conventional medicine.

Do you know, or know of, anyone who ever died from overdosing on marijuana? Liver failure from it? Kidney failure? No?...that's because it's never happened, and never will.

Now, studies show it DOES NOT cause lung cancer ( it's all the additives in cigarettes that do that )

Unfortunately, if it were made legal on the federal level, the pharmaceutical companies would lose TONS of money....it's the classic case of the almighty buck......

Why should something that would be so helpful to common, everyday people remain illegal because of $$$$$$$$ ???

I am split between this...

On one hand: it is considered a "gateway"drug that will lead to other, more harsh drug use. The government will have a hard time getting people not to 'smoke and drive'.

On the other hand: its effects are no worse than drinking alcohol. I do not smoke, nor do I plan on ever smoking, so it really doesn't matter to me, but if alcohol can be legal, so can marijuana.

well some pot is legal but only through the government and that is for like cataracts and stuff but y will the government legalize there pot and not pot off the street i mean alcohol, cigerettes, crack, coke, and other drugs are way worse than pot and they don't legalize government crack or coke and a lot more people die from alcohol and cigerettes than pot. i jus don't understand and i've heard that doc's say if ur pregnant and smolke pot then u can't jus quit cold turkey b/c of the effects that it has on the baby afterward. so i mean doc's say to not quit if ur pregnant and goverment issues it so y not have it legal and do u know how many people smoke pot? a lot, and a lot of peolpe drink but i bet if u got 2 people that are the same age and everythin and one smokes pot and the other drinks then i bet the one who drinks will die before the one who smokes pot.

Marijuana should be legalized. Considering the amount of harm it does to society it is not worth the amount cost in policeing and prisons to justify the expense of keeping it illegal.

I'll tell you why I would like marijuana to continue to be illegal. And please, no alcohol analogies, alcohol is only bad when its miss-used and overconsumed.

Is because:

1. Effects of Marijuana on the Brain. Researchers have found that THC changes the way in which sensory information gets into and is acted on by the hippocampus. This is a component of the brain's limbic system that is crucial for learning, memory, and the integration of sensory experiences with emotions and motivations. Investigations have shown that THC suppresses neurons in the information-processing system of the hippocampus. In addition, researchers have discovered that learned behaviors, which depend on the hippocampus, also deteriorate.

2. Effects on the Lungs. Someone who smokes marijuana regularly may have many of the same respiratory problems that tobacco smokers have. These individuals may have daily cough and phlegm, symptoms of chronic bronchitis, and more frequent chest colds. Continuing to smoke marijuana can lead to abnormal functioning of lung tissue injured or destroyed by marijuana smoke.

Regardless of the THC content, the amount of tar inhaled by marijuana smokers and the level of carbon monoxide absorbed are three to five times greater than among tobacco smokers. This may be due to marijuana users inhaling more deeply and holding the smoke in the lungs.

3. Effects of Heavy Marijuana Use on Learning and Social Behavior. A study of college students has shown that critical skills related to attention, memory, and learning are impaired among people who use marijuana heavily, even after discontinuing its use for at least 24 hours. Researchers compared 65 "heavy users," who had smoked marijuana a median of 29 of the past 30 days, and 64 "light users," who had smoked a median of 1 of the past 30 days. After a closely monitored 19- to 24-hour period of abstinence from marijuana and other illicit drugs and alcohol, the undergraduates were given several standard tests measuring aspects of attention, memory, and learning. Compared to the light users, heavy marijuana users made more errors and had more difficulty sustaining attention, shifting attention to meet the demands of changes in the environment, and in registering, processing, and using information. The findings suggest that the greater impairment among heavy users is likely due to an alteration of brain activity produced by marijuana.

Longitudinal research on marijuana use among young people below college age indicates those who used have lower achievement than the non-users, more acceptance of deviant behavior, more delinquent behavior and aggression, greater rebelliousness, poorer relationships with parents, and more associations with delinquent and drug-using friends.

There's no reason for it to be illegal who gives a crap if people want to use it-they're going to whether it's legal or not. That being said you'd think this administration would legalize so they could tax it and make a quick buck.
