My father is LDS, I am not, but I go to a Christian church. He and I don't speak very often because he cheated on my mom and abandoned my family to marry another woman (not LDS) 5 years ago. I have grown to forgive him in the last 5 years, but we are still working on our relationship. I am getting married soon and he said "his church does not allow him" to participate in my wedding, but he will be there. I wasn't really planning on him giving me away, I have already asked my brother to do that. My question is if this is common LDS practice, not to be involved in other weddings? I know that LDS do church weddings outside of the temple so non-members can be there. Is this true then that they cannot participate in Christian ceremonies? From what I know of LDS beliefs, he is not following doctrine, so why does he say this? I'm just asking out of curiosity. It seems hypocritical to me, but I am trying not to judge.

I thought it was commonly assumed, but "giving me away" is meant in a ceremonial sense, it doesn't mean that anybody owns me. Thanks for the input, though.

I am mormon. It is actually fine for members to participate in weddings outside of their faith. We can give people away, Mormon bishops can perform weddings outside the temple for non members, and so forth. SO if your dad is telling you he can't, it's not because he is mormon.

Like most people have said, there is no doctrine of teaching in the LDS church about attending or participating in weddings of other faiths or in other churches. I'm sorry that your relationship with your father has been through such rough spots. I hope it will get better,

He probably just has personal reasons and is using his religion as an excuse. There is nothing in the Church's beliefs that would prevent him from being able to participate in your wedding. I'm sorry that you have such a difficult relationship with you father and best of luck with your marriage.

He is lying. My parents are LDS and they participated in my wedding. There is nothing that says LDS people can't participate in other weddings. Find out the real reason he doesn't want to be there.

I'm Mormon and we can go to other weddings outside of out church! Your dad is obviously avoiding this wedding. You should ask him straight forward why he can't go! I'm really sorry though. I had trouble with that too. Hope you can work it out and have a wonderful marriage.

We can participate in weddings of other religions. There is no doctrine or anything that says that we can't. He probably is using it as an excuse.

It sounds as thought your father is a very confused man....the LDS or Mormons have some good ideas but they don't put the emphasis where it belongs...on Christ Jesus....they tend to try to lead the way with other books like the Pearl of Great Price, The Book of Mormon, and some others, when all You need is the Bible.....Not a man named Joesph Smith, not the angel Moroni, stay true to your feelings and just remember your father in your prayers......as long as there is breath in the body , there is hope for the soul.

Sounds like he is working on a lot of guilt. I would simply go along with what you have planned and not worry about his actions. They do not conform to any church I have ever heard of.

Ok, I'm not LDS, I'm not even religious at all, but you are your own person.
Your father does not own you so he can't give you away. No one own's anyone.
Oh, and stay away from LDS...they're crazy.
