If you go back to Genesis 18:16-33, the reason God destroyed Sodom is because of the outcry against the city:
"I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know." Genesis 18:21
Of course, God didn't need to visit to know. But I think Abraham needed the assurance that God cared enough to come down from heaven and see "in person."
Abraham pleaded with God not to destroy the city if he could find as little as 10 righteous in the city, but they were not to be found.
Further, the Angels that were sent to deliver Lot and his family clearly would have been unsafe in the city (if they had not been Angels). It's not simply sodomy that caused the destruction, but lawlessness, inhospitality, and the "outcry" of the victims of its violence and godlessness.
If the Sodomites had been on fire for the Lord, they wouldn't have been on fire from the Lord.

Darwin, how do you come up with these questions. Of course, when God destroyed Sodom (put a y on the end) and Gohorrah, it was a Godly thing, because Sodom was full of homosexuals, and Gormorrah was downright sinful in everything. God has to give you no reason for what He does. If the world ends tomorrow, do you think He is going to warn you first. Or ask your permission before He does it.

A very Godly thing to destroy iniquity.. God is Holy.
Rev 6:4 And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.
Joel 1:15 Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.

The destruction of all sin and wickedness is godly. True judgment requires a capacity for full truth -- not just partial truth. More than this, there must be some understanding, balance, to see alternative views and extenuating circumstances. There must be a mature impartiality and the strength to do the difficult task of condemning even those you love dearly, because true justice demands it. You need not be a judge, attorney, or law enforcement officer in our nation today, to realize the importance of judgment. You can be a victim caught up in a storm of feelings regarding your own experience, and the need for true judgment, that removes all threats -- once and for all -- and that restores your confidence and your peace of mind is easily understood as vital. Do we need any such GOD, when we can establish perfect justice for ourselves, among ourselves? You be the judge.

God can read hearts, He knows people who are capable of change.
Probably, when He reads the hearts and mind of the people in Sodom and Gomorrah - its sayz We had the right to do with our bodies and you God has no right to tell us what to do and not to do with it!
