It depends on what fits your need better. Both can be good dogs. Just be sure to adopt or to buy from a reputable breeder before getting one. Both are difficult to handle breeds, so you want to know what you are getting.

Dogs are individuals. To generalize and say German sheperds are better than pit bulls (or the other way around) really isn't fair. That being said, each breed will have certain characteristics that may be more suited to you than another. If you're considering a dog, I encourage you to go to a German sheperd or pit bull rescue and find an animal with a personality most compatible with your lifestyle.

I have a German Shepard cross, never had one before my 'little' girl - she's awesome! All the German Shepards I've met are just awesome dogs. Very smart, docile, sweet, loving, protective - but able to tell when it's someone who's friendly too. The only disadvantage to a pitbull is that they have a much thicker coat and are larger <-- not necessarily a disadvantage.
However, you have to remember that they are a dominant breed, so extra socializing is required.
Beautiful dogs!

Better how? In order to answer this, you need to know why you want the dog. Different breeds were created for different reasons.
IMHO many people in my area (Fayetteville NC) want pit bulls as a fashion statement. They want ugly scary growly mean-looking dogs. They want something that makes THEM feel tough and pit bulls apparently do it for them. That is the worst reason to get a dog.
Pit Bulls when well bred and well trained can be excellent dogs. Many many many are poorly bred and some are actively encouraged to be mean. Of course the same could be said for German Shepherds.
Best to know why you want one, then do the research.

Better at what? Home protection, go with the shepherd. Rat killing, go with the Pit. The shepherd is the bigger dog if that is a factor.
Different breeds have strengths & weakness. Pits have more allergies. Shepherds have more hip problems. Shepherds need more grooming. Both are dominate breeds so be prepared. I think that Pits are more intelligent but that is based on my experience.

Absolutely, Shepherds can be made mean but the line has generally not been breed to be the monsters that most pit bulls are. Shepherds are very protective and very loving if trained properly. The best pit bulls are time bombs.

IT JUST DEPENDS ON YOUR NEED. THE PIT BULL WAS BRED FOR FAMILY NEEDS AND BULL BAITING, NOT TO MENTION RATTING AND SO ON... THEY WERE USED ON FARMS FOR ALOT OF REASONS.
GERMAN SHEPHARDS ARE GREAT FOR SEARCH AND RESCUE.
IN REALITY BOTH DOGS ARE GREAT ANIMALS FOR AGILITY, LOYALTY AND DEDICATION TO THEIR JOBS. I GUESS IT GOES DOWN TO YOUR PREFERENCE OF LONG HAIR OR SHORT AND APPEARENCES.
PERSONALLY I LOVE PIT BULLS FOR THEIR LOOK, THEIR DEDICATION AND THE FACT THAT EVERYONE SEEMS TO LOOK AT THEM AS EVIL. THEY ARE DISCRIMINATED AGAINST IN ALL HUMANITY. THESE DOGS HAVE JUST AS HIGH A STATISTIC OF BITING AS THE GERMAN SHEPHARD. YOU JUST HEAR MOPRE ABOUT IT BECAUSE IT IS CLASSISM AND RACISM. MOSTLY WHITE AMERICA OWNS GS'S AND MOSTLY BLACK AND HISPANIC AMERICA OWNS PB'S.
DID YOU KNOW THAT PIT BULL IS ACTUALLY A TERM FOR SEVERAL DOGS RANGING FROM THE SHAR PEI TO THE BULL TERRIER? THE NAME AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIER IS A DECENDANT OF THE PIT BULLS OF EARLY DAYS. THESE DOGS ARE BASICALLY A MIX OF ALOT OF DIFFERENT BREEDS.
I DO NOT HATE EITHER DOG OR ANY DOG FOR THAT MATTER. BUT I WAS BITTEN BY A GERMAN SHEPHARD, A MIN PIN, A JACK RUSSELL TERRIER AND A LAB MIX. I DONT HATE ANY OF THOSE ANIMALS.
PIT BULLS COME OVER ALOT OF HATRED BECAUSE OF THE PRESS WHEN IN FACT ALOT OF THE ALLEGED PIT BULL ATTACKS ARE DONE BY MASTIFFS AND MUTTS.
BUT I THINK THAT THE DECISION OF WHICH DOG IS BETTER SHOULD BE LEFT TO A PERSONAL CHOICE AND NOT A JUDGMENT ON A BREED. BUT IF YOU MUST JUDGE BY STATISTIC AND TEMPERMENT TESTING...
GERMAN SHEPHARD 83.1%
AMERICAN PITBULL TERRIER 83.5%
THIS INFO WAS TAKEN FROM THE AMERICAN TEMPRAMENT TESTING SOCIETY WEBSITE...
