Last minute airfare is never cheap. The travel sites normally will not allow booking 24 hrs in advance, but most airlines themselves will. Some airlines offer bereavement fares for funerals for immediate family members of the passenger. You will have to provide the funeral home information to the airline and they will verify it. Some bereavement fares are not cheaper than the lowest advertised fare. Your other option is to call the airlines reservations line, which will usually be a call center in India and you will barely be able to understand ther person on the other end and just get frustrated. Yeah that may sound rude, but they took our jobs, I have no patience for them. Plus you'll usually have to pay a booking fee for using the phone.

Shoot me an e-mail with your city pairs and I will see what I can find. I worked for an airline and I know a few back doors to finding flights.

Airlines often offer something called a bereavement fare just for such occasions. In order to qualify you must be a member of the immediate family and you must provide the name and phone # of the funeral director. What the fare actually is is the lowest possible fare for that route.
Sorry about your loss.
BTW if you don't want to deal with Bombay ;show up at the airport and see what you can negotiate at the counter. You can easily find out how full a flight is and adjust your strategy accordingly

The best airline to fly last minute is Southwest Airline www.southwest. com because they never charge more than about 350 each way no matter when you book. Most airlines totally ding you if you must book last minute so I really appreciate Southwest's policy. When I went home because my mom almost died other airlines were going to charge around 1000 dollars even with their medical emergency discounts! Just call 1-800-IFLYSWA and they will book you right away.

You'll have to call the airline directly. You'll pay full fare or close to it unless they have discount seats still available by some chance (it'll depend on where you're going and where you are). Your best bet is to call a smaller regional carrier to get the best deal versus a large carrier.
