In my opinion the South Beach Diet is nothing more than Atkins for the first week or so and then it gradually shifts to a Zone-like diet where you get a balance of carbs, protein and fat.
No diet has to be followed to the T. It's so much more important to understand the why's of the diet rather than just following the menu plan food for food.
It reminds me of school. Some people only like to memorize answers to a test. They didn't want to bother learning how to arrive at those answer themselves. When the test was over, they dumped all of the information. Same goes with diet plans. They follow the menu plans, lose weight, but have gained nothing in terms of meangingful knowledge that will prevent them from gaining the weight back once they go off the meal plan.
The concepts of losing weight are pretty easy:
*Eat fewer calories than you burn
*Eat 3 meals and two snack per day, no more than 5 hours between eating.
*Drink plenty of water and fluids
*Get a balance of your calories from fat, protein and carbs at every meal, roughly 30%, 30% and 40% respectively.

No, of course not. You are free to experiment, the meals provided in the book are guidelines on what are good meals to have during the phases of the diet. By studying these meals, you also should get a good idea of what you are NOT supposed to eat while you are on this diet. You do, however have to follow the DIET itself quite strictly for it to work. But if you hate fish, you don't have to eat it just b/c it is in the book.
Good luck!

Here is what you need to do, if you are serious about losing weight and keeping it off. Eat 6 small meals a day about every 4 hours. Here what that will do for you, your metabolism will increase (i.e. Loose weight) and you will have more engry. If you go on a diet and eat less, your metabolism will slow down and store to fat. That is why diets dont work. Only the size of your fist, carbs (examples:baked potato, pasta, oatmeal, beans, corn, melon, apples, fat free yogurt, whole wheat breads)in one and protien (examples:chicken breast, swordfish, shrimp, turkey breast) in the other. You can also eat vegetables and salads with any meal, they dont have none or little fat). 30min cardo exercise every day. Any of these(examples: walking, jogging, swimming, running, biking, ect), Monday cardo, tues upper body (arms: curls, tricep extensions, pull ups, front press)(abdominals: leg pull crunch, leg raises), (chest: bench press, butterfly, pullover)(shoulders: front press, arm pullover, cross county skier machine)(back:seated row, lat pull downs, back extension)(YOU DONT HAVE TO DO IN ONE DAY, mix it up) wed cardo, thurs lower body (legs: leg pull, leg press, squats, lounges) fri cardo, sat upper. Sunday eat anything you want and dont exercising, you do this on sunday so your body doesnt go into starvation mode. YOU NEED TO TAKE SUNDAY OFF. If you stilck with this you will have a great body. also drink aleast 8oz of water daily! Stay away from Mcdonals, Wendys, ect because there is nothing good for you on the menu's even the salads are bad (beaon bits, cheeze, dressing, ect) Good Luck :)

Low or healthful carbs in small quantities. It does now not include as prime fats as Atkins. It is way fitter. If u don't seem to be certain what to devour purchase the frozen south seaside nutrition foods for every week and take a look at that.
