My mom has alzeihmers disease. Our family is grieving but I want to prepare for the days that she won't remember us anymore. Anything I can do, such as find out things she liked in her childhood , her favorite foods etc so when she no longer remembers I can visit her with things to comfort her.

Write things down. Take photos and label them. We write the day, date, and weather down for my grandfather. He has been going through this for 8-10 years, and it's very sad for us. He seems to be happy most of the time, though. He didn't forget everything all at once, though. It takes time. Enjoy the time now!

Her favorite pasttimes will change. One of the things we didn't expect to happen was that he'd stop listening to classical music, his passion. He couldn't follow it.

Definitely find out those things you mentioned so you can engage her on conversation, even if she is unaware of who you are at that moment. My grandfather still likes to talk about his job and some of the things he did when he was younger. He definitely still likes chocolate covered cherries, but he doesn't remember when he's already had some, so he just keeps eating.

Please be prepared that some days she'll know who you are, and other days she may not. Now, my grandfather remembers my mom, but not always his wife. Some days he knows my uncle's name, but not my mom's. This is the part that I think hurts the most. How could someone who's been such a big part of your life not know who you are? It's so strange how the brain works and how Alzheimer's progresses.

The worst thing you can do is to try to make her remember. The only thing you'll accomplish is making yourself feel bad when she doesn't remember. The best thing you can do is live in her reality. If one day she thinks she 10 years old, just go with it. It will only upset her if she finds out how old she really is.

I'm sorry to hear about your mother's diagnosis. Ask your doctor if there are any support groups in the area.
