It depends on if you are married or not. From my experience e-4 (specialis) and below mostly will have a roommate. In germany (i left germany in '02) th grunts had 4 and 6 man rooms. weahd 2 man rooms that shared a bathroom.
It also depends on where you are stationed. if you are married and get on post government housing then yes you do have a roommate!!!! your spouse!

Are you talking about living in the barracks? If so then you'll find that most bases have remodeled barracks. Yes you will have a roommate. Each equipped with a twin size bed, wall locker, a bathroom to share with your roommate, refrigerator, and some have like a 2 burner stove. If not then there is usually a stove in the day room. Usually there's a laundry room in the barracks somewhere.

It'll depend alot on the branch of service and what post their duty station is located, and whether or not they're married. Generally speaking, the housing is going to be similar to a university dormitory. There'll be 2 or 3 man rooms with a common area for all to gather, do laundry, etc. When one gets higher in rank, they have the option of off post housing.

as a former Marine:

No it is not like an apartment
You have about 175 roomates
You don't just share a room...he'll be sleeping about 18 inches above you

Unless you're in the Air Force...then:

it actually is an apartment
you'll have one roomate
and you actually have your own bathroom

You're at the bottom of the pile. So it's barracks living, with bunk beds and the rest of your platoon.
