I'm Japanese. A guy from New York told me that the Japanese who try to speak English sound like they're all brain damaged. Japanese accent sounds stupid, he said. I wasn't offended because what he said is a plain fact for him. By the way, he teaches English in Japan. In Japan, there are many foreigners, and, for example, Americans who speak Japanese sound very cute while Chinese accent sounds funny (humorous). So, I'd like to ask how the Japanese who speak English sound like to you.

♡My husband is Japanese, we live in Japan, and he speaks English perfectly fine. His accent sounds natural to me. He in no way sounds 'brain damaged', on the contrary! (*^o^*) He has me to listen to 24/7 though, so I suppose I'm his 'private English teacher' (and I do a darn fine job, mind you!(^_-)-☆). Perhaps this guy from New York who teaches English in Japan should rethink his statement! If he's saying those people sound 'brain damaged', they're most likely HIS students who do, so what kind of teacher does that make him??\(^∇^)/
~Makes you wonder, doesn't it? I hear many people speak English here in Japan and they all sound different, to be honest, because they're individuals! Some have studied longer so they speak better, some have had American or Australian teachers, so their accents vary, but I have NEVER heard anyone who sounded 'brain damaged'. Many of the young girls even sound cute speaking English! (☆What do YOU think, by the way?) Hmmmm, interesting question!♡

I used to think the same way. That was before I learned a few of the basics of Nihongo. Now that I have a better understanding of where they're coming from I don't feel that way at all. It seems perfectly natural that a Japanese accent sounds the way it does. What's weird is that this guy must know something about Japanese and he isn't willing to relax his anal arrogance.

Also, I've noticed that Japanese people, as a whole, seem to be getting better at speaking English. When I watch older Japanese movies and Anime in Japanese and they say a few things in English, it's much more difficult to understand than in newer movies and Anime. With Anime it's especially obvious in the opening and closing songs.

There's nothing WRONG with the accent of Japanese people speaking English!!!!!

Your 'friend' is merely showing his own mental age by making such gormless comparisons...!

I think they sound fine. Of course anyone speaking a foreign language will sound different, but not "brain damaged".
