Then when she and her dad (my brother) are away from each other, she always talks about her dad (in a positive way)!

Any advice on what to do? I think it is hurting his feelings (even though she is only 5).

It sounds like you are talking about a broken home situation. He needs to give her time and attention; a lot of love. There is no single answer to earn a child's love, comfort and respect all at the same time. My six children did not respond to me in the same way; no family does. Somehow, I have related better to my daughters than I have to my sons. I have a soft personality that makes my daughters more comfortable around me. My sons have always had a hard time talking to me and I to them. I have always been more comfortable around women than men, even growing up. I think my sons respect me but I'm not sure about being comfortable or loving.
In short, be soft and attentive. She will grow to be comfortable around him as they develop mutual trust and respect.

Dad is going to have to be a presence in his child's life for the child to be comfortable around him.

Get down to her level.....do things she likes to do.....then get her to talk by asking questions. It could be something as little as coloring with her...you might start out by asking her what her favorite color is,make sure you let her know your favorite color.Let her help when you are doing chores, etc. This will not only teach her responsibility, but also gives her knowledge and time spent together.
Be patient and give her lots of love and attention.....Good Luck!!!

All he can do is give her time. I understand that his feelings might be hurt but he can't push himself on her. Tell him to keep trying. Be her dad that's all he can do she'll come around.
