The United Nations was founded, in the words of its Charter, in order “to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war”. Meeting this challenge is the most important function of the Organization, and, to a very significant degree, the yardstick by which it is judged by the peoples it exists to serve.
United Nations peace operations entail three principal activities: conflict prevention and peacemaking; peacekeeping; and peacebuilding. Long-term conflict prevention addresses the structural sources of conflict in order to build a solid foundation for peace. Peacemaking addresses conflicts in progress, attempting to bring them to a halt, using the tools of diplomacy and mediation. These activities are, by definition, mostly of a low-profile nature, and their quiet successes may even go unnoticed altogether by the public at large.
Peacekeeping is a way to help countries torn by conflict create conditions for sustainable peace. UN peacekeepers—soldiers and military officers, police and civilian personnel from many countries—monitor and observe peace processes that emerge in post-conflict situations and assist conflicting parties to implement the peace agreement they have signed. Such assistance comes in many forms, including promoting human security, confidence-building measures, power-sharing arrangements, electoral support, strengthening the rule of law, and economic and social development.

The term UN peacekeepers is an oxymoron.
The UN is a joke.
The UN is an organization that supposedly exists to preserve world peace. It has failed miserably. It sat idly by during genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, and the former Yugoslavia. It has also failed to broker peace between Israel and Palestinians and failed to prevent 20th century wars in Korea, Vietnam, the Balkans, Afghanistan, and the middle East.
Did you know that Libya once ran the human rights committee and Syria ran the disarmament committee?
Funny Joke huh?
"Why should the US support an organization that places nations such as China , North Korea, Libya, and Syria on par with Western Liberal democracies?" The UN is full of members whose nations are nothing more than tyrannies, kleptocracies, and criminal enterprises masquerading as countries.
But to answer your question... The "peacekeepers" are from all the different countries that are supposedly dedicated to peace and international law. They perform the checks and balances between the countries. They sit back and watch dictators line their pockets all the while starving their countries.

A RAG TAG group of soliders that get sent into dangerous places to pretty much serve as targets. The overall UN is pretty much a Joke. The Real Power behind the UN is the US. Without US firepower backing the UN it would collapse like a House of cards in a tornado. That would be why Isreal is asking for NATO peace keepers if there is to be a ceasefire and a Neautral zone between Lebanon and Isreal.

UN peacekeepers are basically involuntary mercenaries. Since the UN does not have armed forces of its own, they 'rent' soldiers from third-world nations for UN operations.

The difference in what those soldiers cost and what the UN pays them tends to make a tidy profit for third world nations. Needless to say - when the goal is to provide those soldiers as cheaply as possible, you are not getting 'elite' troops.
