Since you will be living in an apartment, I am assuming your dog will need to be able to hold their bladder for a few hours at a time while you work. In that case, I suggest you adopt an adult dog, rather than getting a young puppy who cannot hold their bladder. Make sure you will be allowed to have a dog at your new apartment. There may be a weight limit imposed if you are allowed to have one (which is unfortunate because many smaller dogs require a lot of exercise, and many huge dogs are big couch potatoes!)
Research different dog breeds online to find one that you think will fit with your lifestyle and personality. By volunteering at a breed rescue or animal shelter, you can learn more about which kind of dog suits you best.

What's all this with small dogs? Big dogs can fit in very small apartments if you are willing to take them out and give them exercise. I hear Irish Wolfhounds make great apartment dogs and they are the largest breed there is! (I wish I had a wolfhound to know for sure!)
Get the kind of dog that fits your lifestyle. That is the best kind for your apartment.
A good adoption counselor at your local humane society or no-kill shelter can steer you towards the best dogs that meet your lifestyle.
Better yet, volunteer at the local shelter and when the perfect dog comes along, you'll be right there to get to know him!

Well i would go for small because large dogs do need more room and it would be easy on you in some ways. i would check out a local shelter i know every one want a purebred but i have a beagle/cocker i got outside of walmart of all places and he is been such a blessing came to us a year after my dad died and has been what we needed any way most people at the shelter can tell you if a dog is going to be big/small/med and it is true a dog you get from the pound is very loyal like they say they know you did somthing special for them so they give it back 100% back if not more.

Consider adopting a retired racing greyhound. Greyhounds are very good in small spaces. They are a low energy breed and will sleep during the time you are at work. They are a single-coated breed so they shed very little (although if you are in an area that gets cold during the winter they will need coats). Greyhounds are really good if you don't have a yard because they have *extremely* good leash manners and are very happy getting the majority of their excersise through walking. As another poster mentioned it is best to get an adult dog who isn't going to 'go' all over the place or chew on the walls, etc. Retired racers are crate trained (translates very well to housebreking). Another plus for greys in apartments is that it is very rare to hear a greyhound bark. Go to http://www.greyhoundpets.org for more information or to find an adoption group in your area.

You should check to make sure that your apartment allows dogs. But I agree, smaller is better. A big dog will not be comfortable in such a small place.

A small breed is better for a small apartment. Also, they don't require as much maintenance as a big dog. I have a pekepoo, but any small terrier type would be just fine.

you might want to try your local shelter and ask them for some advice too
