Estimates vary, but a reasonable conclusion is that 25 percent or more of individuals with Down syndrome over age 35 show clinical signs and symptoms of Alzheimer's-type dementia. The percentage increases with age. In the general population, Alzheimer's disease does not usually develop before age 50, and the highest incidence (in people over age 65) is between five and 10 percent. The incidence of Alzheimer's disease in the Down syndrome population is estimated to be three to five times greater than in the general population.

I cant remember the details, but Im sure at medical school I was taught that people with Downs syndrome are more likely to suffer dementia, the age thing is not relevant.

Definitely worth some more research.

Do a google search 'downs syndrome alzheimer's' and you will see there is a lot of evidence out there to say there is a link.

Most people with Downs don't live past 30. It's -very- rare for someone to get Alzheimer's before they're in their 50's.

My sister has Down's and I do a lot of work with the charity. I know lot's of people affected by this disease, but no, I;ve never heard of any of them contracting Alzheimer's. I sure hope it doesn't happen to anyone you know though.

I didn't think that downs syndrome people lived very long life spans, it would have to be a very early onset of alzheimers.

unfortunatley alzheimers can be presented in a person with downs syndrome. it is part of "getting old" and as people with ds tend to age quicker then people without ds alzheimers can be present.

Very uncommon. People with DS seldom live beyond the age of 40.
