You don't need to dye it to bring back the shine. Hair lacking in luster? You might be suffering from build-up. Start by using a clarifying shampoo to remove stuck-on conditioners and styling products. After you wash and condition, try a quick cold-water rinse--hair scientists won't tell you that this trick works, but many swear by it.
Conditioners with a little siliconecan add shine, but don't overdo it or you'll end up with flat, oily looking hair; avoid leave-in conditioners. Spray-on shine products work well, but again, easy does it. For a serious case of the dulls, try a colorless gloss.
Another cause of dull hair is damage from processing or overbrushing. Damaged haircuticles don't lie flat, so they can't reflect much light.
If your hair is curly, keep in mind that you'll never get a really high shine -- it's just not physically possible. Because it bends and twists, curly hair can't reflect as much light as straight hair.
Don't wash your hair every day, but do shampoo often enough to remove dirt and buildup, about two or three times a week. When you do wash your hair, use shampoos and conditioners that contain humectants. Leave the conditioner on your hair as long as possible. About once a week, do a deep-conditioning treatment.
BioSilk by Farouk Systems is a great product to add luster and moisture back into your hair: http://www.farouk.com/biosilk/silktherapy/st-ss.htm
You can find BioSilk at your local salon and I do believe they are starting to carry it at Smith's Food and Drug Stores nationwide.
good luck!

dying it will not make it more shiny. There is shine products out there that will do that and are not hard on your hair. If you really want to dye your hair look into using a henna product.

I miss my hair so much when it was long, healthy and natural. Now I dye my hair because I hate waiting for it to grow out. You should do whatever you want though, most people end up dying their hair at least once.

there actually are clear dyes out there, no pigment, but just for that purpose, to be shiny. Theyre still as damaging because they contain chemicals but are made for that purpose.
