I have been abusing laxatives for years, and now my colon doesn't seem to work without them. Any advice?

I'm sure all these answers telling you to eat fiber and drink water are good, but if you have been abusing laxatives for many years then you are probably going to need the help of a doctor to get you back on track. Your body doesn't know what to do anymore.

The health food store should have some 'natural' laxatives and teas you can switch too first. Don't make such a drastic change right away. Start changing your diet. You have to drink lots of water when you take lots of fibre.

There are different kinds of fibre as well, soluble and insoluble. You have to have a balance of both. There should be some good websites on this if you Google.

Enemas are fine too.

The mineral tablet Magnesium....check on line for amounts. I found this out a long time ago....very natural outcome (sorry)....anyway I take one tablet and if it doesn't work I take one the next day. I think you can take more but check first and why cause things to go the other way....that is a problem as well. This never fails and others say the same thing.

do you know those candy bars they give out at the Bingo games at the retirement community center?.. I can't remember how they're called... But it says on them no sugar... I think the aspartame in it works like a laxative... I had to give my daughter when she was 3 she was constipated a lot. It worked like a charm...
If I remember how they're called, I'll re-edit my reply.

It is important to concentrate on your diet. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables and high fiber cereals and other grains. Another very important factor is to drink lots of water and juices every day - at least 64 oz. or more. Above all, check in with your doctor regarding this matter!!

In the hospital they used to use a mixture of MILK OF MAGNESIA and PRUNE JUICE. mix it together, it does not take much maybe a capful of MILK of MAGNESIA and a few ounces of prune juice.
ALL BRAN cereal is also good
APPLE SAUCE
Below is a web site of some information.
A little toning up of exercises will also help.

It can be normal to not poop for two to three days, even a week as long as you're getting enough fiber and water. You'll just have to figure out what's regular for your own body.
