I am wondering what kind of dog would be best for a 13 year old. I don't like little house dogs though.

A golden retriever, German Shepherd or a lab. They are all very affectionate and loyal dogs. My personal favourite is a lab

mutt! go to local shelter or ASPCA, they are wonderful, cheap to adopt, usually get "fixed" for free too, they also tend to have less medical problems than purebreds
I have 2 mutts (45 lb austrailian shep mix, and 65 lb pit/shep mix) they are great with children of all ages.
Pitbulls are great dogs, they have a bad rap b/c of the people who raised/trained them. They are the most unwanted breed and are smart, protective, loving, and goofy. So don't be afraid to get one.
I work as a vet tech and I rather work on a pitbull then cocker spaniel, yorkie, corgi, or chow anyday!

Get a lab! They listen, they love water! All they want is to be loved! My lab loves to nibble my ears, and basically sit in my lap! My mom has a Golden Retriever, I loved her to death but she has so many health problems :chronic allergies (she takes prednisone year round), and she hates noise (fireworks, beeping noises), she hates them so much she will make herself bloody just trying to get into the house (not to mention the damage to the house).

Whatever dog you do get, make sure to do your homework! Make sure they are AKC, and if you can afford it, get a dog that has OFA and CERF certifications. Then you will have a gaurentee for the hips, elbows and eyes!

I would definitely get a lab, they have so much personality, and love to work for there owner! We takes ours hunting every year and she absolutely loves it! It is what they were bred for, so they will have a natural instinct to hunt!

goodluck

We have a golden retriever that is great. She sheds a lot which is the only issue but we have wood floors so it really isnt a problem. Great dog with kids.

I have a German Shepperd/Wolf....it's a mix! I love him sooo much, and he is absolutely great with kids! He is super protective, and love to play with them. If ANYBODY was to hurt us (I'm one of the kids) he would destroy them....or at least get them to leave. People are less likely to approach us too. He would never ever ever hurt us though, he is really gentle with us. He's getting old now and his hips are bothering him, it's sad. I would recommend getting a German Shepperd......part wolf if you can find it!

Good luck and God bless!
