(Is there anyone else here who has ever had to give a spanking when babysitting)? Years ago when I babysat spanking was far more acceptable and more widely used than it is today, so I do remember having to give an occasional spanking every now and then, when at certain households while babysitting.

When I was a teen I babysat all the time for over 15 different families. I could definately tell the difference when parents spank thier children or not. If they did not it the kids were crazy! I always prefered to babysit for the kids whose parents spanked. I would never hit the kid myself nor have I ever, that is the parents job. You could get into a lot of trouble if you hit a child that is not yours.

A babysitter should not spank a child unless they have permission from the parent, and understand what conditions the parents will allow spankings.
Today some parents don't spank at all, some spank for serious things (like touching the stove, outlets, etc = potential danger), and some spank for any infraction.
I wouldn't lay a hand on another person's child without their consent and only under the circumstances in which they feel a spanking would be warranted.

I would be pissed if someone spanked my children even though their father and I do. This is the reason our kids go to their grandmother's while I'm at work. I'd rather have her correct my kids than someone else. I agree with you in a way though. I don't babysit anymore. When I did babysit my dad's exgirlfriend's kids, they were horrible. Her 4 year old told me to "shut the fu*k up *****." She got her butt busted for that. I never watched those kids after that; not because her mother was mad at me for spanking her, but because I refuse to watch children that have parents that can't control them.
edit: when I told the mother what her child had done, all she said was "you aren't suppossed to do that." Some parents are so stupid.

if you're no longer mushy then do not do it. share your thoughts with the mum and father and ask them in the experience that they have got any selection punishments that could artwork. in the experience that they do no longer have any recommendations then do exactly the proper you could without spanking. Times are sure different now, spanking is taboo and my only advice would be to discuss appropriate punishment with the childs parents before hand so that there isn't any problems down the road for you. I babysat for a friend of mine (3 kids). The youngest was 4 years old and potty trained, and he would be sitting on my furniture watching cartoons and urinate in my chair because he was too busy watching tv to get up and use the toilet, after about 10 times of having to clean my furniture I had had enough he wasn't allowed to watch tv on my furniture, then one time he was outside playing and pooped his pants, so I was upset that he couldn't come in to use the bathroom so I put a diaper on him and needless to say my girlfriend was very upset with me so I vowed never again to take it upon myself to decide someone elses kids punishment, I always get a clear idea from the parent before hand so that I know where I stand on things. If a babysitter layed one finger on my children we'd have serious issues!. But on the other hand years ago teachers gave spankings. And also as a child I got plenty of wallops from my parents, but now if I spank my own child I could very likely end up in jail.

I don't believe spanking is an effective form of discipline. And a babysitter certainly should not be spanking children. People should use their brains, not their brute strength, to discipline. It may take a bit more time and effort, but that is why we have brains. I wouldn't want anyone to have spanked my children when they were being baby-sat. Spanking is a lazy person's form of discipline. And spanking when angry can lead to beating, which is abuse.

You never spank someone elses kids. I remmber the babysitter spanking me to a abusive hitting and if I ever ran into her now I would slap her. anyhoo I would not like someone spanking my kids so I don't spank there's . There is other forms of punishment.

No way! Never ever! I neve rused to spank children when I babysat them. I feel it is ONLY OKAY for a parent to physically discipline their kids. Not even a grandparent should be allowed!

Aside from my siblings' children who I already know & We have previously discussed their disciplinary requirements I would never punish another's child physically.
No one should spank another's child. If I hired a babysitter...& they put their hands on my child they would take a ride down to the police department. I would press charges and make sure they were prosecuted.
