Why do we tend to surround ourselves with people that see things the same way that we do, and why do we strive to make others see things the same way?

I'm not like that at ALL--why would you make that assumption?? The more diversity I can find in the people in my life, the better I feel myself becoming at tolerance, acceptance, and human love.

Okay, that was three questions... here are three answers...
1. It's only important that others believe like you if they are in danger and the truth you have to offer will keep them from danger.
2. In every culture throughout time and space, beings have clung to those who are like them so they can confirm their identity.
3. People strive to make others see things the same way perhaps because of one of two things: a) they care about the person and know there's something they need to know, or b) they want affirmation for the way they think.

If we surrounded ourselves with people unlike ourselves we would argue and clash all the time. I also think that it makes us feel more secure knowing that someone else has the same opinions as us. I think we would feel like we were odd, weird, and maybe even insane if everyone disagreed with all of our morals and beliefs. I think that we share our opinions with other people to see eachothers view points (some people do it just to argue). Seeing things through someone elses eyes helps us to be more open minded.

I don't I am an atheist, my husband is Catholic. I lean more to the left, he is a republican. My friends are all over the place in their beliefs. I prefer diversity, being surrounded by people just like me would get boring. I like to hear different opinions, if all your friends think like you do, then you don't get that.

I don't. What I believe is people will believe what they want, just like they will do what they want. If I influence them, it's not b/c I am pushing the way I feel on them. As for my friends, they all believe in different things and that's what makes me friends with them....is b/c they don't follow what other people say, kind of like sheep.

Some do, some don't. But if you truly believe something is true, your interactions with others will reflect that belief.

People try to validate their beliefs that way. I think it's wrong.
