I think that some people have a genuine concern about the home-schooled child learning good social and interactive skills. Others worry that the parents may impart prejudices along with the other learning.
I bet that most people who demean it have never seen it in action, or know much about it. Isn't this true of everything we generalize and stereotype?

A lot of parents aren't qualified to teach, which causes the children to be behind their classmates. A fundamental right of being an American citizen is a basic education, and homeschooling doesn't ensure that right. Especially in high school biology where parents tend to teach creationism over evolution. Even a Ph.D would have trouble teaching all high school subjects at the level their child would need to succeed.

Yes. They are acting as agents of society. Society wants to program people to act in the best interests of society rather than in their own best self-interest. The major socializing force for this is public education. Homeschooling your children effectively removes most of the society programming.....so people will attempt to convince you not to do it (which is, of course, one of the most important reason why you SHOULD do it). It's best if you go all out and literally throw away your TV set and put severe restrictions on all socialization of your child outside the family. A child raised in an environment like that is a natural leader, able to impose his will on the world, not the other way around.
Note, that like most society zombies, naysayers to homeschooling are best dealt with by simply ignoring them.
There is a much better reason to homeschool your children, btw. It is a disturbing fact that marxists (liberals, socialists, communists....whatever you want to call them) have taken over our school systems in an attempt to change the socialization process away from the best interests of society toward indoctrination into marxism. Marxism is a sick doctrine responsible for most of the evil in the world of the last few generations. You definitely don't want to expose your kids to that. Anything could happen. This phenomenon is probably the most dangerous thing to protect your children from and requires further study on your part. The negative consequences of not doing so can be quite extreme.

I agree with all of you PLUS I think there is a really simple fact involved in people's predjudice...they're jealous. I've know so many public school kids and most of them are accepting but their parents are not. It seems to me that they wish that they could homeschool as well.....or, more likely, that you didn't so they could feel better about their choice. They like to feel that public schools are there only choice and we remind them that that is not true.
They seem to particularly resent homeschoolers when they suceed, which would imply jealousy. I think that they hate knowing that homeschoolers are not forced to put up with all of the "powers that be" and that they, in effect, defy "the system".

I think a lot of public school teachers and supporters of those teachers don't like the fact that parents aren't relying solely on them for their child's education anymore. And yes (emp04) there are plenty of "qualified" parents out there that homeschool...and no, you must be pretty stupid to think you would need a PhD to teach high school biology...it's not that complicated. Plus, many curriculums walk you through it..thus, not needing a PhD. And yes, many homeschooling parents actually have degrees. Don't assume they aren't educated because they choose to homeschool.

well, i can't speak for everyone, only myself.. but the only reason that i feel homeschooling can SOMETIMES be bad is that it makes children more vulnerable to being "brainwashed" by their parents. brainwashed is extreme, but what i mean is that a lot of homeschooling parents want to keep their kids out of public school because they don't want them straying from their own personal beliefs. i think this is ultimately harmful and unfair to the child. i think kids should be able to decide for themselves what they believe and what they agree with and don't agree with. i think homeschooling is often used for the wrong reasons (to influence your children towards your way of thinking) instead of the right reasons (to provide your child with a quality education). so, i don't know if this helps you figure out your question, but this is my opinion on why i don't personally think homeschooling is the best thing.

The government (and maybe some parents) want "social engineering". Most homeschoolers, my self a former one included, are independent and free-thinkers. Public education systems don't like that one bit.

probably the teachers union feeling that they could be losing the power to mess up kids minds. I guess there are also some people who feel that if kids are homeschooled they wont become mindless graduates from the institutions of sheepery.

Ignorance! Pure ignorance!
I homeschooled my daughter for 5 years, and people really don't understand anything about it and they have no desire to find out what it's really about.
