I am looking to try something from my home before i ask the vet, because this is a very old cat with bad experiences with the vet, so i would like to hold off on taking her as long as possible to reduce the stress on her...Any suggestions?

She has never used plastic bowls for eating or drinking...they have always been ceramic...what else could be causing it?

cotton ball with a little alcohol on it worked for one of my old cats

also just googeled it:

"Feline acne is usually treatable by topical treatment only. There are a
number of things that people use for it, with benzoyl peroxide shampoos,
vitamin A ointment (Retin-A, Rx), metronidazole gel and mupirocin ointment
being the most common recommendations. When topical treatment alone is not
sufficient, the use of systemic antibiotics or corticosteroids is sometimes
necessary. Most cats will respond to corticosteroid treatment within a
couple of weeks. Some vets have tried isotretinoin (Accutane Rx) in cats
but according to "Muller and Kirk's Small Animal Dermatology, 6th ed" the
success rate is only about 33% to this medication and it is pretty expensive."

Dry and/or greasy skin due to poor oil composition of the skin. Thick greasy oils clog pores, lack of oil leads to dryness and irritation. You need thin oils to moisturize while dissolving and clearing gunk in your poors. Try fish oil or seafood. 2 tsp fish oil a day or 4 servings of seafood a week. Stick it out for at least 2 months; it will take a long time to replace all your oil. Any effect after 1-2 days is temporary or random; so even if it makes you break out a little at first, you haven't given it a full try yet.

In the short term you can wash and moisturize well, but that will only go so far. Plus excessive washing can be drying and excessive moisturizing can be clogging. Use a small amount of a light moisturizer, made with oil not jelly or grease. Often that means soybean oil or mineral oil. Mineral oil means mined from the ground. So soybean oil is usually better, though mineral oil won't cause too much harm. Clean with soap and water, not a harsh acne cleanser. Even then they only work so well. So you really need the seafood.

Antibiotics aren't really good for bacteria long term, they'll come back in force after. Short term they may help. After you get off them find some kefir with acidophilus listed first or 2nd to replace the friendly bacteria they destroyed. Studies show less illness when you have these bacteria, even outside the stomach in places such as the lungs and elsewhere. You want friendly bacteria to fill the void when the antibiotics stop, not harmful ones.

In the short term you might also try 100,000+ iu retinol vitamin A (a megadose, and too much for normal use) or one of the acne drugs that is similar to retinol vitamin A. It's some minor harm to your organs, but it helps against bacteria on your skin. At least it doesn't have the other long term drawbacks to your skin that antibiotics and many scrubs do.

If you would like to learn how to treat your acne permanently and regain your health and wellbeing, without drugs, without typical acne treatments, and without any side effects, then this will be the most important letter you will ever read.

Feline chin acne is usually caused by the containers which you are feeding the cat with. Most cats are fine, and some just develop allergies for unknown reasons, just like human beings do. Plastic dishes generally seem to cause the most problems, as soon as the plastic gets the slightest damage to the surface, food and saliva particles will get into the damaged area and basically rot. This is generally so tiny, you cannot see it with the naked eye. You may try using ceramic or stainless bowls for food and water and see if that makes a difference. I keep a spray bottle of 1/3 tea tree oil (which is a natural antiseptic) mixed with 2/3 filtered water. This works well on helping to heal the chin breakouts, as well as any other scratches on both animals and people. I have also used the same mixture to clean my pets ears and cut down on the ear mite infections without using some of the chemical compounds that you can purchase. Best of luck to you and your fur baby...no matter how old they are, they are still our babies; just like out children are. Have a great day!

I just read the answer to this question in my cat tips I get in my email every week a few weeks ago. I had never even knew cats got acne but it said to get a cotton round and dab some peroxide on the acne.

Like acne in humans, its causes can vary, including food allergies, contact allergies, and (some experts believe), stress.

You can use alcohol on a cotton ball as mentioned above. You can also use a mild facial soap and astringent.

If she is using a plastic food/water bowl, switch to ceramic or stainless steel.
