I am really interested in this also!

Buy a dog with AKC certification. Look at the pedigree and see what kind of titles the dogs have, for example you can have : obedience, hunting, field trials, conformation, etc... (there are so many). It would be best to get a puppy with a pedigree in which you would like to breed. So if you want a lab and you want to breed your lab for obedience, look for a pedigree with a ton of obedience titles!
Then make sure the parents are OFA certified. OFA stands for Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, they keep a database of dogs that are certified for their hips and elbows being in good standing to breed. This will gaurentee that your puppy has the best start to life, considering the parents hips, elbows are in good standing then the puppies hips, elbows will more than likely grow into strong healthy hips, elbows!

Also make sure parents are CERF certified. This makes sure their eyes are genetically predisposed to not having problems! Then your puppy will not have problems (more then likely) with his eyes!

Once you have a puppy that will be genetically predisposed to making the breed better, then the time comes to take your puppy to classes and competitions to recieve titles in what you want your dog to excell in!

At 2 years of age is when you get your dogs OFA certification. This is when you take your dog to a vet who can take an OFA x-ray. The vet then sends this to OFA and OFA approves your dogs hips and elbows! Also get your dogs CERF certification through a qualified dog opthalmologist. There are other tests that you can have done, that are specific to your breed of dog!

Now it is time to find a mate for you dog. Make sure that your mate has all the same specifications as your dog does. Excellent/Good OFA certifications will make Excellent/Good puppies!

Just remember that females are at risk of having complications before they even reach 2 years old, or are ready to have puppies! Such as pyometra (infection of uterus). This happens after subsequent heats with not getting pregnant, and is extremely high in dogs over 8 years of age. So if you have a female don't breed her every heat, breed her every other heat!

Also, breeding is for people who want to make the breed BETTER! and want to refine the pedigree, and strain out any problems known to that breed of dog!

We have a lab, who is a 5 days away from being 2 years old! She is AKC, now alls we have to do is get her OFA and CERF certified. Then in her next heat we can get her pregnant! We are breeding her for her natural hunting ability and instinct!

Goodluck, there isn't much information I find out there, for people that are extremely interested in becoming good breeders. If you find a good vet, and little by little come across information about breeding, you will too becoming a great breeder!

Pick a breed you can manage. Most serious dog buyers do not like so-called "backyard breeders." Do not breed a female constantly...only every year and a half. Pick your kennel name and advertise in Dog World. You have to stake your own reputation on the best dogs you can. If you haven't already, talk to serious dog breeders about best practices and you can always learn from books. I would recommend for starters the series of books such as How to be Your Dog's Best Friend, How to Raise your Puppy and Dog and I...from monks in Cambridge, NY. Good luck!

Pick a breed fo dog.
Get one of that breed.
Show the dog and learn everything you can about the breed.
Join the breed club
Participate in the activites your breed of dog does.
Train your dog to hunt or herd or track or what ever that breed does.
Show you dog in conformation until you have at the very least a CH title on the dog.
Get all the genetic testing done on your dog and then offer him for stud or have her bred.
It is not cheap and by the time your dog is a finished Champion any puppys you produce will have cost you about $1000 each may more depending on what breed you choose.

You might need to check with your State Dept of Agriculture.
In the state of GA if you sell more than 3 litters in a year you need to be licensed with them.
The benefits of having a License is that you are inspected routinely and they keep a check on how clean and well treated your dogs are.

i thought about doing that , but I don't think I would be able to let any of the puppies go! I would go to the AKC website.

Start with purebred dogs that have won lots of awards. Buy a huge acreage and build warm secure kennels. Find a very good vet.
