A dog that fits your personality and lifestyle is the best type of dog to have.

If you are a couch potato, make sure to get a dog that doesn't require too much exercise, or you will be left with an antsy, barking dog who is desperate to go outside (consider an older dog).

If you love hiking and the outdoors, make sure to get a dog who can handle the exercise and the elements (perhaps a young pit or shepherd).

If you love boating, a dog that can swim and enjoys the water would be perfect (perhaps a lab).

Even within a generalized breed or mix of breeds, individual dogs have personalities. By adopting an adult dog, you will already be able to see their adult dog personality and can see if they would fit in well with your family.

I have personal favorites, but they work best for me. You need to first think about what purpose you want for the dog. Someone to go running with? Or are you a couch potato? Are you looking for someone to bark if a stranger walks past, or a quiet dog that like everyone? One that's easy to train, or is that important to you? Do you want to lavish lots of affection on it and groom it constantly, or do you want a dog that doesn't demand a lot of attention? Do you want a big, cuddly dog or a small one that you have to watch out for as you cross the room (Ooops! Did my personal preference just show?)

Most importantly though, decide where you want the dog to spend it's days and nights. If the answer is in the backyard, then I have the perfect suggestion: one of those concrete dog statues. A dog on a chain or locked up lonely in the backyard is cruel. And don't think the kids will play with it. We all know they will be inside with the air conditioning and TV. Meanwhile the dog dies of loneliness.

Go to your public library and look at books that rate the dog types: One I like is called The Right Dog for You. There are other good books too. Just remember that these books talk about breeds in general. There can be a mean labrador retriever just the same as there can be friendly chows. In general though, the history of the dog breed will give you clues about how the dog will act as an adult. Dalamtions are high energy dogs bred to run under carriages for long distances. Dachshunds are bred to go down badger holes and kill badgers. They can be assertive aznd hard headed. Collies are herders and so will be protective, but they may nip at heels of children, etc. Know the breed purpose before you make a decision.

Let me just mention too, that the animal shelter is a great place to find older, easier to housetrain dogs. (Yes, and puppies too!) And there is an average of 25% purebred dogs in most shelters.

It depends on the person. Some like the cute, small ones that don't shed fur and are small enough to pick up and good for apartment life... but someone who doesn't have allergies, likes sports and lives in a big house would probably like a good guard dog like Retriever.

do you want a cute dog? a big dog? a small dog? a loyal dog? I Would suggest a German Shephard because they are really cute and are loyal to their family- they do get pretty big so i wouldn't suggest having one live in a apartment. Yorkshire Terriers are really small too so they are great too!!

You really should let us know what your circumstances are. Do you live in a home with a yard? An apartment? Do you have children, how old. Do you have other pets?

It's hard to answer your question without knowing more. I'd like to give you more advice, but I can't at this time.
