Your local County Council has an obligation to exterminate wasps - not bees (bees are protected). It should cost about £10 depending upon which council area you live in. Calling a private extermination contractor will cost a hell of a lot more. Get in touch with your council's pest control department they will offer you good advice. If you have small children the council should act quicker.

Basically don't do anything til evening. The insects will be less likely to react at this time and they will all be in the nest so its the best time to remove it. I had a 4 inch nest in my loft. I put on a thick pair of gloves and bagged the nest before they knew what was happening. Sealed the bag, re-bagged it and binned it the night before the dustbin men came. It worked a treat. But you have to be brave.

make sure all the wasps are settled and that none are flying around the nest....then very carefully cover the nest with a bin liner....making sure that the top end if fitted tight to the top of the nest...so that no wasps can get out...with the help of a friend..get them to support the nest while you cut through the top....immediately tie the top of the bin liner.. once you have cut the nest down..be very care full not to rip the bin liner..

What you need to do is put 4 to 5 layers of your thickest clothes on,
some thick boots (DocMartins work well), wrap a scarf around your face and wear shades and a hat. 5 layers of marigolds should protect your hands.
Take a can of Lynx or other strong deodriant and go up there with a lighter.
Keep your finger on the spray nozzle and use the lighter.
You will now have an instant flame-thrower.
Burn the nasty little bastids!!!!

Raid, puts out a spray that kills the wasps on contact. Spray it on and wait a couple of hours and spray it again. After waiting overnight if no more wasps left. Remove the nest.

Good luck, think youre gonna need it!! All I know is that the council will only get rid of bees nests, not wasps nests so youre on your own!! Call a pest control company, see what they suggest!

If you don't like using pesticides then you may want to spray them with soapy water. That will only kill the ones that get it on them It will not kill the nest it will also not kill them right away so bee careful. Wasps can keep stinging you unlike a honey bee that can only sting once. I would wait till dark get a long stick with a flat surface on the tip and squash them in their sleep.

You can buy products to use.

I have got rid of loads of nests just by using a jet from a garden hose. With the hose you can stand a long way from the nest and because the nest is made of paper you will destroy it. I've not been stung once and I have got rid of at least 30 nests.

welllllllllll there are two ways. tell me which one u like best.
1. call the professionals i......this can be quite costly. about 6 years ago it was £25 quid for us so we decided to do it on our own which bring me to number 2.
2. we had a large nest in our shed. ok this is the truth but i wouldnt recommend it to the faint hearted. my husband put his bike helmet on...we had a bon fire going anyway and he dropped it into there. okay okay its not for everyone...but we were really struggling with money and we didnt know what to do. so before i get all the humane people on my back.....we really didnt have any money so we had to do it.
so the moral of this story....if u got the dosh (dont know how much these days) just ring the council and they wil do it for u but if u dont...get a bike helmet and some good gloves.

Strip off down to your underwear.
Take a standard sized cricket bat and strike the nest firmly.
Stand until you cannot bear it any more then run away.
The nest will be beyond redemption and the wasps gone from your shed.
Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind but don't bother to thank me.
