A non HDTV (or Analog TV) can't use a HD signal for the same reason that an American TV signal can't be received properly on a European TV; the scan lines are different. A HDTV packs more scan lines in so the difference is like the difference from a 800 X 600 screen resolution to a 1024 X 768 screen resolution. Your computer and a HDTV use a digital signal so they can make the conversion easily. However, your old analog TV doesn't use a digital signal. Comparing the two is like comparing an old wind up clock to a modern digital clock.
Congress mandated that when the HDTV conversion was finally made the industry had to provide converters. That hasn't happened yet because the TV stations are still broadcasting analog signals. Congress’s idea was to make sure that people weren’t forced to change to the more expensive HDTV sets. When these converters come out they will take a digital signal and convert it into am analog signal. The electronics industry is going to delay having to produce these converters until most people already have HDTVs.
DVD players, TiVos, and VCRs typically have both an analog system and a digital system, as do most modern TVs. The connections that use screw on wires are analog, while those that just plug in use digital signals. When you feed in the signal from a satellite dish, a cable, or over the air you are receiving an analog signal. The VCR and other devices use a digital signal. If you have an old style TV with only a screw on connector or antenna then it requires an analog signal. If you use a modern TV with digital input then you can receive a digital signal, but NOT a HDTV signal. Your TV still needs to convert the signal into an analog signal in order to display it. The HD signal packs too much information, and it doesn’t carry any conversion data to transform a HD signal into an analog signal.

Your digital cable box should have composite outputs (yellow, red, white plugs) that can plug into one of the "external" inputs in your TV. The cable box will output a standard analog signal on the composite outputs (even if the program is in HDTV). If your TV does not have "external" inputs, you can get an "RF" modulatir that accepts the composite video and outputs it's signal on channel 3 or 4. Just plug that into your TV antenna. Call your cable company for help--they should be able set it up for you (you may have to "tell" the cable box to use the composite output). I recommend you try to get it to work, because even though your set is not HDTV, the picture will still look better if it comes from an HDTV source.

Ask your local cable company for an older motorola box. Whether it be a moxi or a dct 6200 series box (light grey color). On the dct 6200 you can go into the diagnostic menu (make sure the unit is powered down, and then hit the menu button) it will give you the option of what resolution you want to watch the channels in. And on the moxi box, go into the setting menu, and go under hdtv. It'll let you choose which resolution you want in there. Be sure to hit the okay button at the end, or it won't take. Hope that helps!
