I am going away to school and there is a room available for very cheap in a nice apt. The only problem is this room is TINY and I don't know how I can furnish it. It is 6x12 feet, very narrow. The door is on one of the 12' walls about 4 feet from one corner. The closet opening is on the 6' wall at the corner diagonal across. This layout creates a problem because the bed obviously has to go on the side of the door with more space (with the door being about 2 feet, 6 feet of wall remains to corner on the larger side) but then it will be blocking the closet.

Firstly, has anyone else ever had a room this small? If so, how did you have it furnished? I was thinking a fold out Full size futon to put on the closet side that I can fold out to sleep and fold in during day. Will full size fit in a roughly 6' length area, so it doesn't obstruct the doorway? Any other furnishing tips? Is this place just too embarassing and I should forget it?

Thanks.

A futon is a pain to put up and take down. And it takes up a lot more room than you think once you get it.
Even though they've been kind of "out of style", a day bed would work good in this room. Day beds give small rooms the appearance that they're actually bigger and taller. Use only light colored bedding, because darker colors make things appear huge. If you could paint a wall in this room, I'd paint the 6' wall at the head of your bed a darker color, like red, blue, green purple, whatever you like.
put your desk behind the door on the other 6' wall, and put shelves all along the 6' wall above the desk. This will make up for lost space you don't have for books, nicknacks, pictures, etc. If there's a window on the opposite side where the bed would go then get a small feminin bench to go under the window. I'm not talking a plain kitchen or school looking bench, but wrather a decorative type with a cushion, or just a chair would work okay next to the window by the closet. Have the cushion a darker color, though.
Also put a "saying" above the closet door and your bedroom door and window. A saying is like a thought painted onto wood, or maybe a floral decoration or something else that matches your style. For some reason this makes a room appear larger as well. Just over the closet door would be enough also.
If you get a rug for this room, make sure it's thin and of a lighter shade. Drapes should be lace or sheer or white and should go to the floor and be hung just outside the sides of the window to make the window appear larger as well.

Good luck! Hope I helped!

If I was going to furnish this space here is what I would do. On the 6 foot wall that does not contain the closest I would build a loft. Because you only have 6ft of space you will have to custom build it. A twin and full size mattress are 75" long (over 6ft). What this does gain you is a space under the loft that you can put a desk or dresser if you want then you could make the space work. There are website that sell lofts that you could use for inspiration. I have included a few. If this place is really for a great price and in a great location I would say go for it. The space is not great but it is workable. My room in my first apartment had 7 walls. It had been converted from part of the living room. I had three walls that were just windows, one wall that was the closet plus maybe a foot or two on one side, one was the door, one was a fireplace that had been bricked in and the last was just long enough for my bed. I loved it, and it was 3 blocks from campus so I made it work for 2 yrs. Good luck.

Going with a fold-out futon is a great idea with such a narrow space.

My first home-of-my-own was basicly a converted shed that wasn't much bigger than that: It had a bedroom, a closet, a closet-sized bath, and a little 'galley' separated from the sitting room by a bar.

You shouldn't try to fit in much more than the obsolute essentials: A bed, and a desk and chair for doing your homework. And a table lamp or perhaps one of those snake-lamps that you can bend around to where you want it. And a bookshelf and depending on your closet space, a trunk for packing your sheets and towels, or other things in.

Good luck with school!

Well there is always a daybed, you can get storage space underneath. If you can stand a twin bed that is. Or a loft bed too. Ikea has really cheap ones. Get everything small scale and do a clean sweep on your belongings don't haul extra junk, Don't forget the walls you can put plenty of stuff on them and closet organizers will help. Watch that show called small spaces on hgtv or go to hgtv.com and look for hta show and they can show you some tiny spaces that people have made work for them. Good things come in small packages!! Be cool stay in school. Good luck!

One word: IKEA, you need to find one...they have mock rooms set up as displays (just the size you are speaking about). Seriously, find the closest one to you or search online. This store inexpensive as well, something to think about if you have a tight budget as well!
