I've had the same and I've researched it a bit and a lot of it depends on what you're doing before you go to sleep. No offense, but things like sitting on the computer really don't help. Also, there's a lot to do with stress levels and what you're thinking about when you can't sleep. If there's things on your mind, the best idea is to get them down in a notebook, or do what you can to resolve things before you try and go to sleep so you don't worry about it.
Good luck - I really, really know how you feel!

I used to have the same problem, tried meds but they just aren't good for you so I took "sleep course" Here are some important tips:
1. Always go to bed at the same time, get up at the same time too, it is important for your body to establish a rhythm.
2. One hour before going to bed, turn off all audio/visual aids in your home ( TV, stereo, computer) reading a book for a while makes you sleepy.
3. Do not drink alcohol, tea or coffee about 2 hours before going to bed, do not eat anything either, if you are a smoker, try to avoid smoking too.
4. Allow yourself a certain amount of time to ponder on things..say..no longer than 30 minutes otherwise your mind stays too active for sleep.
5. Make sure your bedroom is well ventilated.
6. If you do not fall asleep, or wake shortly after going to sleep, do not get up! Just lying in bed is also a way to rest your body and mind and, although this may not be as good as actual sleep, it is a good substitute until you get your sleeping rhythm right.

I have insomnia also, caffeine, stress, smoking, all have been related to it. Try turning the t.v off and forcing yourself to sleep. Eat a snack before bed, full belly always makes someone sleepy. over the counter meds make your issue worse, trust me. There are herbal things you can use. Teas, valarian root ( herbal valium) was suggested by my doctor.

What kind of exercise, or other activity, do you do? If you're not getting physical, you won't sleep as well.
You didn't state your age, but, if you're an adult and married, sex IS a pretty good sleeping pill.. But, don't tell your mate. LOL
