I see alot of people talking about being "right" about things that are irrelevant in relation to things like spirituality and religion. Why is it that every time someone thinks they are "righteous" they have to get up on a pulpit and damn everyone else that thinks differently? Are they really that insecure in their "truths"?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I guess I can say why I'm a jerk sometimes! On this site especially, I've noticed alot of sarcasm, anger, and finger pointing. As a Christian, I never mind questions about Christianity, I get them all the time at work. My husband is a Pastor, so I get questions all the time at church too. It's the way in which the question is most of the time. A attitude of anger, and that I'm stupid for my belief, I guess it gets to me, and I fire back, which I shouldn't do.
I don't talk about being right. Sometimes when they blast me because of how I believe, I do ask them, what if you're wrong? Or, I'll say, what if we're right? That probably shouldn't even be asked.
I even have had people e-mail me to tell me I'm stupid for believing the way I do, this site has been really interesting! I also see much immaturity with people too, but I can only be responsible for me. I will be even more careful and patient, and I'm glad of your reminder. Good job, I never want to come across as "righteous" and in the pulpit............

You answered your own question with that last sentence. The reason why people feel it so necessary to be "right" - and will fight for their position - even if it means ignoring logic or facts - is because of the insecurity inherent in all human beings. We need to feel "right" in order to validate ourselves. It is ironic since one of the things that makes us all so human is our incredible ability to be able to think for ourselves - AND - to be able to reflect on things & CHANGE our minds if the situation warrants it. YES! We actually have the ability to CHANGE our own minds! It's quite incredible if you think about it - it's quite a STRONG mind that would allow itself to change itself, don't you think! Yet - what SHOULD be considered a very strong trait is, in fact, perceived by inflexible people as WEAK. And since weakness is the worst thing in the world to these people, their opinions & views must be defended at all costs - truth or logic be damned.

We all have a conceptual system. Our conceptual systems comprise all the assumptions, beliefs and ideas that have accumulated in us through our life so far, whether through direct experiences, from conditioning during childhood, through education, or through the media. We all identify with our respective conceptual systems.

It is important for us to be right because being right is about being consistent with our respective conceptual systems. As our identities are formed out of our conceptual systems, being right affirms our respective identities, whereas being wrong is akin to being untrue to oneself.

Let me ask you a question.....do you believe the Bible to be the words of God? If you do consider this...If a Minister (like myself) preaches a sermon about something a person does not like, who's fault is that? Who should you blame or criticise? The point being....I didn't say it....God's word did! If you have a problem with that, bring it to God, not the Preacher. God said it, not me. If my words match up to God's words how can I go wrong?

It's to get the truth out. We can never be totally right because we are not perfect.

Aren't you guilty of the same thing? Didn't you post this because you want to be right about people you disagree with?
