Prairie Fare: Eat More and Lose Weight
By Julie Garden-Robinson, Food and Nutrition Specialist

"By eating more of certain foods, you can maintain your current weight or even lose some pounds. You may lower your risk for heart disease, cancer and osteoporosis in the process. Does that sound appealing?
Let’s start with tried and true “diet foods.” Eat more fruits and vegetables. They’re high in fiber and moisture, so they fill you up and may crowd out higher-calorie foods. They’re also low in calories and packed with disease-fighting nutrients.
Eat more fiber-rich foods, such as whole-grain breads and cereals. They’re high in fiber with a satisfying hearty texture. Eat more fiber-rich cooked, dry edible beans, too. Drink plenty of water with your added fiber and proceed slowly to prevent stomach upset."

dear poor, of coruse there is a way. I have lived on low income my whole life. I'm 17 and am going to be a nutritionist. I was rasied on mcdonalds, chips, candy, soda and other cheap junk food. My mom never let us waste our food and believed in this food because it was cheap and packed with calories. Now she is over 300 pounds and diabetic. I realize that getting healthy food is a major problem with low income people. The way to solve this is find cheap food that is nutritious and low in fat. Some examples are low fat tubs of yogurt, lettuce, bananas, generic light bread, potatos, beans, 100-calorie pop-corn, carrots, and more. Try to buy genric brands of low-fat products and buy fruit and veggies as they go into season. Also, learn to read labels. Some other examples of cheap nutritious food are oatmeal, soymilk, frozen fruits and veggies, and tuna. these can stay fresh longer than other foods. Cook with I can't bleive it's not butter spray and pam cookiing spray. You have to educate yourself since you do not have money for unneccasary gyms and classes. Don't worry I never spent money on things like that and I am one of the healthiest people I know. Make it a point to walk more and watch less Television also. It makes all the difference. Once you startt learning on weays to make your self a slimmer person it will start coming natural. Just rememeber no one is perfect and when you have a fallback move on.

You don't need to be rich to eat in a healthy way. Eat smaller portions. Cut back on the starchy food (bread, pasta) Eat more fruits and vegetables. (Watch the sale ads, you don't need to spend a lot) Bake and broil instead of frying. If you do use an oil, use olive oil (most stores now carry their own brand, which is cheaper than the name brands). Cut way back on the pop, or other sweetened drinks, drink a lot of water. Hope this helps.
