Make four square pan cakes with the following recipe:
! small yogourt (vanilla flavour)
once you have emptied the yogourt into your mixing bowl use the yogourt pot as your measuring cup for the rest of the ingredients...
2 measures of sugar
3 measures of cake flour (self rising)
1/2 measure of cooking oil (Soy or safflower)
2 eggs (beaten)
1 pinch of salt
Beat all the ingredients together
(If you don't have self-raising flour add a teaspoon and a half of baking powder to your flour).
If you want to make a checkerboard square add 4 tablespoons of hersheys cocoa to 2 of the layers as you beat. That way you will have 2 light and 2 dark.
Bake at a 5 or 6 stat. until a knife blade put in the center comes out clean.
Alternate the layers.
put strawberry jam in between each layer...
Make a cream cheese icing for the outside:
8 ozs. of cream cheese
1 stick of butter or small package of margarine (250 grms.)
1 box and a half of powdered sugar Beat together until smooth.
Ice your cake, you should have enough left over to do your block letters on the side of the cake and write Happy 1st Birthday Baby! on the top.
Add a drop or two of food colouring to make a contrasting colour for your lettering....

My browser isn't working, so I do not have access to something professional. However, I can figure it out. Make a sheet cake, cut the blocks out of it. Frost them with a crumb coat, the frost and decorate. Stack them however you want, make sure the side[s] you decorated is out, and finish them when in place.
You could make one big block, and group smaller ones around it, or make a second sheet cake, and stack some blocks around on top. Use a firm cake recipe for the blocks, like pound cake. Hey, you could buy that at the grocery. They have those decorating tubes, they might help.
A cake decorating or craft or office supply store could help with decorating. If you are not artistic enough to free hand alphabet or
cute duckies, buy stencils, and trace away. Try Martha Stewart.com, she had a cute baby shoe and a monkey cake, she might have blocks, or give you some more ideas.
I've seen cake kits, with everything you need in it to complete the project, do not know if they have a blocks one.
Hope this helped.
