LOL. It's gonna be tough on him at first, and can be a very lonely time, but I think he'll be just fine. I took my basic at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo, but there's gonna be similarities between them all. The gas chamber you mentioned is part of the NBC training (nuclear biological, and chemical) It's where they put a group of trainees in a room full of "tear gas" (C.S. gas in military jargon.) It stinks bad, burns like a mother---, and can make ya puke. But the effects fade quickly, and aren't terribly severe.. You'll also hear about the "night infiltration course" or words to that effect. It's where groups of soldiers put into practice "combat movement" skills. The biggest deal with most people is that it's done with live munitions being used. Myself, I looked up, and saw just how high above us the bullets were, so got up and ran at a crouch. The rounds ARE live, but so far above you that it's doubtful one COULD be hit. (I'm 6'3") This purpose of the live ammo is to give a soldier the beginnings of an idea on what it's like to be in actual combat, with real bullets headed at you.
Throughout the day, they'll be subject to disciplinary excercise. This is done so the D.I.'s point is made clear, but can make em feel pretty harrassed. All in all, he's gonna be BUSY, BUSY BUSY. The pace is kept fast, and stressful to get the private conditioned to the type of environment he'll be faced with. A BCT private's life can suck, and be stressfull, but he'll learn better exactly how much he did'nt know he was capable of, and will be as rewarding as it was intimidating when he passes all the "hurdles" placed between him and graduation.

BCT is just what it stands for Basic Combat Training, he's learning everything he needs to learn about being in the military like using his rifle, keeping his uniforms clean, respecting authority, etc. As for the gas chamber, it's not as bad as it sounds, believe me, I was freaking out when my husband was in BCT and told me about the gas chamber but they don't stay in there too long and all that mainly happens is their eyes water and some get a little sick to their stomachs! He will change a little, I mean he's going through all this tough stuff so of course he will change but he will also stay the same about a lot of things, he'll just be more into neatness and listen better to people and of course more buff, even if it's a little bit. Don't listen to people who say he's going to change a lot so you'll break up because that's just not true, unless these people have been through BCT or any military stuff, they don't know! Just try to keep your chin up and take all of this one day at a time and you'll get through this and he'll be just fine!

Well..this would take awhile...so i'll sum it up as best I can..

what hes going through:
he is going to learn anything military form first aid, to firing a rifle. He is going to be marching with a pack on his back for miles on end. he will be trained on the best ways to defend himself and how to take a life. he will learn how to read a map and how protect against a chemical attack. He will go through a CS gas chamber. cs is the same gas thrown at riots by police. he will learn about different weapons. He will do alot of physical training. he will eat thre pretty good meals a day. He will get yelled at. he will learn how to take orders. He is probably being treated well enough but hes probably very tired and exhausted all the time. He is porbably lonely. He misses you and he misses home. He is making friends and is making the best out of a bad situation.

what he will be like: (this is assumptions and what i've seen in the past i obviously don't know for sure but these are a good bet)
He will be stronger and more alert. He will also be a little more crude when it comes to language. he will be a little more tolerent of arguements and easily dominated at first. He will be more dependant. He will be weak-willed when it comes to making decisions. In the army, at first you are trained to do what you are told. He will treat you differently, but only a little. He will not try to break up with you. He will look for your support. he wil be jealous when he does not get your attention.

in short the best way you can find out what he is going through is to mail him. He can get mail from anyone. Just ask his mother she prolly has his address or will get it soon. If she doesn't she can call the base he is on and get it easily enough.

hope that helps. go to www.army.com for more info.

Way too much work, look at one of a dozen website on Basic Combat Training. He is learning discipline, marksmanship, he is learning to take orders & being smoked anytime 1 makes a mistake - teaches an Army of One. His physical shape will increase & he will learn map reading & compass points.

He should be more polite, more respectful of others esp.
authority, & he should be more buff.

My son said Basics taught him what he needed to know to get through Officier Training School & Ranger School.

while he's at basic, his entire outlook on life will change. Since yours will not, you two will probably break up.
