UK - 5 years straight from 18 or you can take a first degree then do a 4 year medical degree. Then 2 years foundation for registration, then specialist training (length of this 3 years minimum for general practice, maximum - dependent on amount of time spent in research).
US & Canada - pre med & med school - 7/8 years total. Then internship & residency (4 years more).
It's a long haul!

Not Long enough sadly in many cases! Maximum should be open ended. Most of the medical profession learn something new every day usually at the expense of a patient. Min should be 5 years, long enough for the party to peak!
Many of the students that study to be doctors are sent... before they realise that it could actually be an interesting and rewarding career. Others see the fortune to be made either way I figure the question could be modified to how long does a student spend at Uni before starting to study to be a doctor?

In the uk? If so the degree is 5 years unless you already have a degree, then the graduate programme is 4 years. If you have no science experience you may have to do an extra year before doing the degree which brings it up to 6.
