Because then no one would know what was "needless to say". It is just one of many expressions people use. It is like "basically" or "if you will" the latter often used by reporters.

Saying "needless to say" is like saying "obviously". It's just a phrase, don't take it literally.

For the same reason that people use the word "like" in sentences. It's a habit or words they pick up from hearing those around them using them, usually from childhood on. Chill Out. Why don't you quit listening?

It means, "obviously" or "apparently"
stating the obvious, usually.
"She left in a fit after he angered her at the party. Needless to say, she's a bit of a drama queen."

Because, even though they are saying it's "needless" they aren't saying that they aren't going to say it anyway. "Needless to say," just means they are acknowledging that everyone probably knows what they're going to say or agrees with what they say, but they're going to make the point anyway....

Needless to say, it's because what they're saying is obvious, but the questioner just doesn't seem to get it. Others just like the phrase, though.

that is true... however, some people are so damn dumb that they may not know... therefore, causing one to say "needless to say" before something that may not have needed to be stated to a person of "normal" intellect!

Because, although it's 'Needless to say', not everybody catches on, and you have to add on that 'Needless to say' so that they understand.
