Space Odessey? Aren't you thinking of Orion? It's an imaginary line between the north and south states, because the southern states are traditionally "more Christian" than the northern states. Why? Because people of a given ilk tend to flock together. It's nothing about the north or south states themselves (well, it partially is based on culture, history, blah blah blah) but it's about how people group together...
Or maybe it's a belt formed from the flesh of slain bibles. Eep!
