I am unsure if I have place 1/2 inch Hardibacker or some other type of cement backer board over 3/4"plywood for my granite tile countertop. It is a small 2'x4' square(8-12X12 granite tiles total) that will be supported unbderneath. Thanks in advance for your responses.

Not for a counter top and certainly not for something that small. Backer board is strongly suggested for walls where sheetrock is because sheetrock can delaminate (come apart) in high moisture situations. Plywood should work fine for your application.

As a builder of counter tops the answer that I have for you is yes if the top will be used in an area that may get wet.. A 3/4" piece of plywood as your base with a 1/2" piece of underlayment for your tile base. If you are going to install the tile in an area that may get wet use a cement backer board, otherwise 1/2" plywood is fine.

No, not for countertops. A good rough top (plywood) will be okay for direct mudset application.

The fabricator and installer who did mine did not use hardiboard under mine because they said it was not necessary. I haven't had any problem with it in 5 years.
