I want to take my cat with me to college next month, but the thing is, pets aren't allowed in the dorms. I think I can keep him hidden for the semester by hiding his stuff in my dresser, keeping his cage and litter box under my bed, etc. I've already OK-ed it with my roomates, but my parents are against it.

What do you guys think? And have you guys done the same thing with your pet(s)?

I want to take my cat with me to college next month, but the thing is, pets aren't allowed in the dorms. I think I can keep him hidden for the semester by hiding his stuff in my dresser, keeping his cage and litter box under my bed, etc. I've already OK-ed it with my roomates, but my parents are against it.

EDIT*: Ok first off, he won't be in the "cage all day long." The only time he'll be in there is when the dorm halls are running room checks where the RAs check each room for anything bad (the cat is quiet and just to be extra safe, I'll keep music playing in the room) and PLUS he LIKES his cage...he goes in there when he wants to feel safe...it's like his haven (it's not really a cage...more a travel taxi thing). I have three other roomates so there will almost always be someone keeping him company.

Also, an important factor: I can't keep him home because I have family in the house who are allergic to cats. My cousin is taking care of him for the time being.

I never went to college so I can say I've never done it. I can imagine how much you love your cat, I love mine too. I have 2 of them. But I think your asking for trouble.
SOMEONE will find out.
SOMEONE will report you.
The walls have ears.
Someone will always find out..
Trust me. Listen to your parents, and don't take it.
Your better off not doing anything wrong in the first place than risk getting caught.

I would see if you can have you cousin look after you cat for the semster and look of an apartment that allows cats for next semester. You do not want to mess up you housing situation or have to pay for the cleaning required for having the cat in there in the first place. You can be kicked out of dorms for braking the rules. Just like you have family that is allergic to cats the next person assigned to that room might be allergic and a standard cleaning does not remove the the allergens from the room.

I love my cat and had to leave her with family before when I could not have her with me. It is hard but it was better for her and me inthe long run.

How did you get him in the first place if your family is allergic?

NO, someone is going to find out, and your cat isnt going to be happy in a cage all day long.. Move out of the dorm if you want to bring your cat. look around the area for small apartments and mabee share the rent with someone at school.

if you get caught, there is the chance they will take the cat away from you. And while you may be mum about the cat, your roommates may or may not. I have to side with your parents here. Although it's tough to leave home, and the cat would probably provide you with a great sense of home, don't take it. It can only turn out bad.

I really don't think you'd be able to keep him hidden forever; your RA or someone would find out, and you would be in trouble. Also, do you really think he would be happiest cooped up in your dorm room all day? And you won't want to have to keep your door closed all the time, anyway. I think you should leave him home. It's better for both of you.

Are you crazy?!

Suppose he was accidentally loose and someone in your dorm or the facility was used to cats. It's probably going to get kicked out of there or possibly get stolen.

If I were you I would leave it home. Why do you need to bring it to college anyway? Your parents are right.

The worse they can do is kick your cat out right? My brother did this in his apartment, they never found out.

"if you get caught, there is the chance they will take the cat away from you."

I don't think they can. They would probaly ask him to get rid of the cat or they get rid of him.

I'm sure he would be much happier in his already familiar environment and its not like you cant go visit him or move him in when you get a much bigger place then a dorm room

Um. CAGE? If you're keeping the poor thing in a cage, I highly suggest you leave him home where he can run free.

Well if you were getting into a good collage...then i would not jepordise that. Have a family member or a close reletive or even some one you trust to take care of it.
