I realize it's a dumb question, but I'm looking for a quick answer. I'm interested in 1979 vintage Beetles and it occurred to me--do they have air conditioning? The one I've found so far has a heater and defroster, but they didn't say if it has air conditioning....

Very rare to find one with a/c. Even the ones that have it do not work well in hot hot weather and they take a lot of power and gas. I would recommend looking for a different car if you need a/c.

Heck no! The heater and defroster don't even work well in them. You have a small boxer engine (similar to a Subaru, but smaller) that is air cooled. There is no way to get heat to the passenger compartment because the engine is in the rear. I would use it for a summer vehicle only and keep the windows down.

I owned one back in 1976 and it was an earlier model than that. I believe it was a '73. And no it did not come with a.c. I don't think they had it as a standard option back then. So I wouldn't count on it.

The air conditioner is called rolling down the windows and speeding up.

Nope, just those great little triangular side windows that you could position to blow outside air on you!
