We are hosting my mother-in-law from Canada for two weeks in October. We are having my family over to meet her. It is also our son's 2nd birthday. We are planning on having the gathering outdoors (weather permitting). Would it be wrong to treat it as a potluck and ask everyone to bring a covered dish? Any ideas on what types of food would be good to serve?

I don't believe it's a good idea to have pot luck when it's a birthday party. Unless it's a bunch of friends hosting it for another friend. When it's for your child, it's better to have a special day just for the kid. If you're going to invite someone to a birthday party, then they're expected to bring a gift. It'd be too much to ask for a gift and a meal. If it's a "family gathering", by all means - make it a pot luck event. Just my opinion. If it is a child's party, with more children, pizza / burgers / hotdogs / nachos are always great. For adults, add some side dishes and a salad. Have FUN!!!

Oh wow this should be Fun!
Give out something cold to the kids and healthy such as fruity ice popcicales you can get them on sale or at regular price at vons. If that doesn't work for you try some soft baked peanut or any chose type of cookies.
You don't want to give them to much sugar as they are young and can get hyper easy and also if you decied to give them cake that's more sugar so you should try to watch that. If you want to give them cake it should be oone of those ice cream made cakes so you don't have to seperate the ice cream and the cake .. just to save some work

Have them watch a movie that the parents and the kids can all enjoy such as finding nemo or something like that and serve kool-aid and popcorn .... then let them lose outside with water balloons and just playing for a little while then bring them back in to wish the Child HAPPY BIRTHDAY ... have cake and open presents and such then let the rest fall into place..... clean -up time then send everyone home.

If the other guests would like to bring something let them just don't make it madatory no one wants to be forced to bring something especially if they can't.

before the party make sure everything's planned out you don't want any mishaps or a mess .

Hope i was helpful and hope the party is fun and good luck ! e-mail me and tell me how the party went

No, potlucks are always great! Saves you from having to cook so much! Since it is also your son's birthday, I'd have a special cake for him, and outdoor party games to play to make it a fun day for all.

If it is a second birthday party, burgers and dogs and chips and cake and ice cream and Kool-Aid.
Ask the others to bring dishes of their own as well.
