Its almost an mutually exclusive goal to get a good gaming computer cheap.
Processor speed is of some importance but video card whether SLI or crossfire is of a little more importance. I have an SLI(2 video cards) and its works ok for me.
Games require fast video cards and lots of ram, 4 gig is now the upper norm for gamers.
2 would probably suffice for some time yet. But the video card plays more of a role.

No computer under 500 is all that good for gaming. For good gaming you need at least 1024 mb of DDR2, a 256 mb PCIe vid card, and an AMD 64 3xxx or equivalent cpu. Those things right there will be more than $500.

Better than good will cost much more.

Ouch! Under $500 and "Specifically Designed for Gaming"?

By the time you add up the three most important components for gaming, you're going to be hurting.

1.) CPU (Go AMD for excellent performance & lower cost)
2.) RAM ... at LEAST 1GB! (Unless by "gaming" you mean solitaire...)
3.) Video Card - I highly recommend medium to upper end nVidia cards over ATI, but you can probably save money by going with ATI. In my past experience with them, ATI = Headaches. You might be able to score a 9800 for cheap now. Just make sure you're getting at least a 128MB (prefferably 256MB+) card, even though most will end up relying on physical memory anyway.

I havent seen any complete systems (minus monitor and such) for under $500 thats 3ghz+ unless you go for a barebone system, sometimes you can find a good barebone system that almost has everything you need, then just buy cheap parts yourself. I suggest looking at www.newegg.com they usually have good deals, and their great to work with.

You're not going to find a 3ghz gaming pc for anywhere even close to $500. Try $2500.

nowhere are you going to find any computer with 3 GHz for $500.

http://www.alienware.com/Configurator_Pages/aurora_3500_r2.aspx?SysCode=PC-AURORA-3500-R2&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT $3700

http://ecomm.dell.com/dellstore/basket.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&itemtype=CFG $3100

Now these are what I would put on there but you can build one yourself:
