i wouldn't recommend a "cat-like" dog for a first time dog owner...they are MUCH more stubborn than other dogs, and are really more of an experienced dog owner type dogs.
still with a classic all round great dog! one that is good for the first time dog home. you need to research the breeds, see which one fits into your lifestyle.
do you want an active dog (like a Jack Russel) or a slower paced dog (like a basset hound).
each dog has its own personaility....etc.
do you want a small dog, medium or large dog? do you want a Low-sheddder..(all dogs shed..some more than others).
do you want a protective dog, or more laid back?
when you answer this things...and research..you will find a dog that will fit your needs the best.and ensure that your dog is happy and YOU are happy too.
here is a site on helping you pick a dog best for your lifestyle.

here is a site that has LOTS of quizes...so you know if you want a puppy or an adult..etc.

When it comes to taking care of a dog, there is no breed that is like a cat because dogs are all high maintenance. You have to walk them all the time, play with them, and you can't leave them at home alone for days. But if you want a dog with the personality of a cat, then I would say get a shiba inu. I have a shiba and they are kind and sweet, but very aloof. They are a lot of work though, so I would read more about the breed if I were you.

Depends on your lifestyle. Go to akc.org to look up different breeds and what type of breed suites your needs best.
I am a Pit Bull lover, but they are not for everyone.
