I'm looking to spend up to £400 on a nice gift, either a trip away in the UK or something special for her to keep (not jewellery - others have beaten me to that). She's young for her age.

Four hundred pounds is a good gift! Think about what your mom likes, then focus on that. Does she have a hobby that she loves(like hiking or dance0? Does she like to take trips or visit museums? Does she like art or has she ever expressed a yen to do something different?
If so, those are your clues, Sherlock. Go for the thing she'd most enjoy. A concert, maybe(buy her tickets), or a class, or a trip to some favorite location.
If worse comes to worse, and you don't have a clue, take her out to dinner, make her something nice(a card or a bit of art--even a few words on good paper telling her how much you love her). You can't go wrong with that. Every mom loves to be told how much she means to her children.
Sometimes it pays to be a bit sneaky to find out what she loves and go for it.

I agree with 'Figato' that a weekend at a spa (Centrepark or similar) would be a great gift where she can be pampered would be great if she is in to that sort of thing. Why not ask her what she would like as there may be something she really wants but doesn't like to ask because she may think you can't afford it. Whatever you get her don't forget to let her know how much you love her - Mum's like that sort of thing, I know as I am a Mum.

Think Aunty Andy has it covered, what a brilliant idea, a jar filled with 60 reasons why your mom is special to you, get her a yuge bouquet of flowers and take her for a lovely meal then give her the residue of the money so she can go and get what she would love to treat herself on.

Flowers are a must and the idea of a trip away is even more wonderful if you, or a friend, accompanies your beautiful mother to a destination where she can relax and enjoy herself fully.

Maybe arrange a surprise birthday party for her with all her family there. Before that you could take her out for the day then come home to a surprise party. Good luck!

Does she like anything that you can purchase for a season.
Like a membership to the local Opera for the year. Or baseball season tickets if she loves the local team.

Getting out and staying active is important.
