Black is associated with death and mourning in western culture, I'm sure you know that. As far as why? Well... it's kind of lost to the ages, but the most popular idea is because the night is black, and the night is regarded as somewhat "evil" because it's generally more dangerous than the day.

Black is the color of mouring, it's supposedly the most depressing color. That, and it doesn't attract attention and usually it's a sociology thing in which white = good; black = bad.
Which is why most hospitals are white, to represent cleanliness and distract people from the fact that someone is dying every 5 minutes.

Out of respect. Mourning colors are different in different cultures, but it all comes down to showing that you're saddened by the passing of this life and will take a moment to reflect on it.

They don't always wear black. Eastern religions (Hinduism, Sikhism, Jainism, etc.) wear white when attending funerals.
The black signifies a sad/solemn mood, whereas white signifies peace and liberation.

it is a sign of mourning the dead and being sad because they died.
the black colour is opposite of the white colour(when we come to clothes wearing ofcourse).....black shows darkness meaning misery and being sad or it can even show evil if worn in a certain way(devil or satan worshippers mostly dress in black when in their meetings)........on the other hand white shows light and brightness leading to hapiness......thats why people always imagine that angels are dressed in white or people dress in white if they are in heaven....
In christianity the veitican pope always dress in white and in Islam the people who go to Haj or pilgrimage to mecca always dress in white and white only........
