First, I apologize for the long question.
Let's assume there are two types of people: the believers and the non-believers, with thousands of subcategories of each.
In life, noone can know what happens after death or if God exists. Therefore, every person in life is just trying to have a belief based on nothing that will comfort them and provide motivation.
The believers of Christianity and or what-have-you will say that they are motivated by the fact that are to be judged one day and want to live a good life and dead relatives watch over them, while atheists are motivated by human achievement, the fact that Jesus is not going to one day come and end the world, that we will not one die and God will say life was pointless, it was just a test to see if you were worthy of Heaven, that your accomplishments to change the world for the better mean something.
Can't we all just be tolerant and get along, knowing that noone knows and we just want to do what is right for us?
No Bible quotes!

Wow, within like 5 minutes, I got some amazing answers. I agree with every one of your answers, including those who disagree with mine on the grounds that believers believe they CAN know and DO know, and also just that humans inherently disagree. I encourage everyone to read everyone else's answer when posting bec the answers are so good, and I will have to leave the Best Answer up to a vote bec the answers are better than I expected.

I think so. I'm a neo-pagan who has a great selection of friends from all religions (and some with none at all) and we can talk about these matters in a friendly interested way, with no presure or fighting, but just communication and learning. It can be done, but people have to do several things:
(1) Want to get along. Not on their own terms, but on comprimised terms between all parties.
(2) Be secure in what they believe so they CAN talk about it, and listen to what others say about their faith without feeling they have to defend their belief or attack the other persons.
(3) Know when its time to discuss the matter, and time to just let it go.

Hmmm. Well, I don't agree with your position that no one knows for sure what happens after death. And I am struck by the fact that you are calling for toleance, yet are refusing to tolerate my reliance on the Bible (). And for the record I don't follow Christ because I am scared of judgement or hell. I follow becuase I have acknowledge that : 1) God exists. 2) I am a sinner and in need of a savior. 3) God's wonderful gift of salvation. 4) Without God, there is no way I can do any good, for all good things come from God. And the list goes on.
Let me also point this out - you will not agree with me, but think about it. Christianity is a tolerance. Christianity says that anyone can recieve the gift of salvation. Salvation is freely given to every man, woman, child and not based on a person country, ethinicity, wealth, social standing, educational level, personal history, sexual orientation or an other excluding standard that currently exists in the world today. All a person has to do is to accept or take the gift. You might even say that salvation is inclusive, as it is avialable to everyone.
You make the comment "...we just want to do what is right for us?" Can I ask: what "right" are you speaking about? Are you speaking about a "right" is only correct for a single person or country? You might argue that I am spliting hairs, but I am not. If your defination is right for just a person then the logical conclusion or result of everyone doing what is "right" for them would be anarchy as there can be no basis for laws.

Nobody stops the atheist from believing that there is no God. But anytime what the athiest believes contradicts what the Holy Scriptures say, that is where I will defend my faith in the Holy Bible.
The Holy Bible speaks of love and harmony and living in peace.
Yes, there were wars in the Old Testament. Wars to show the mighty strength of God against the enemies of His believing children.
But we have passed the stage of the Law and if everyone obeyed the teachings of the New Testament, life would be perfect here on earth.

You are chasing a windmill here. I'll bet that some of the first religious responses will come form the line of thought that they DO know what happens and for them their belief is a concrete fact.
I would be very grateful if people would allow the same freedom of and from religious badgering that they want for themselves, but the vast majority of religious people I have encountered in my life are not willing to allow others the same respect from intrusion that they demand for themselves. Such is the cause of the world's issues today.

I totally agree with you 100%. The world would be such a better place if there was only more tolerance for others. I know that I'm guilty of being intolerant too though, so I suppose I'm not one to judge. You bring up some very good points!

It's a great thought but people feel too strongly about their beliefs and think that if someone is disagreeing that they are attacking them. I would like to think that people who thought like you or I were a majority but sadly as events in the world and as people on here display, people like to walk around with a closed mind and an open mouth. I do what I can to keep the peace. I try to open people's minds. Or at least close their mouths. Peace and love my friend.

I agree, the problems arise when the beliefs of one group are in conflict with anothers.
Example: Isreal taking their land from the other Middle Eastern countries back in the early part of last century, both sides believe it was given to them by God.
Also when religions try to "convert" other to their beliefs, you will have conflict.
Example: Any religious extreamist who thinks you either do things their way, or you deserve to die.

That is a wonderful thought and it is too bad more people can not think this way. But there will always be those who think what they believe in right and everyone else needs to be converted to that way. It is sad but I don't think we will ever be able to be tolerant and get along.

It'd be nice if we can all agree to disagree...It's unfortunate that we can't because there are always those who disrespect others by trying to CONVERT them to their belief system because "its the right one" or "THE TRUE FAITH". Yes relitions are all "motivational" in nature, however flawed they do motivate. Just unfortunate they motivates more killing throughout history than anything else. PEACE!
